Possible failure of Nissen Fundoplication (2021)
I had a Nissen Fundoplication in July 2021 due to hiatal hernia, severe gerd, etc. I had major complications in September 2021 prompting the the surgeon to redo the surgery but adding an "anchor" from the stomach to my abdomen. I've had mild gerd but it has been manageable by meds for 4 years. Recently I got really sick (nausea & vomiting) and since then have had intractible nausea accompanied by frequent deep burping. I'm having an endoscopy next week but am very concerned the Fundoplication has failed again. Has anyone experienced something similar and what was the outcome?
53/F.

Hi, @ufoundme. I am glad to see you create this discussion on your quest to figure out if your most recent Fundoplication is helping. I am just seeing this and first want to apologize for not commenting earlier.
I went to the home page, searched for ‘failed fundoplication’ and found quite a few comments. Most are not super recent so I kept looking until I found a newer one. @nirolk created a discussion trying to troubleshoot problems they were having following the procedure. I hope they provide an update and tag others that may have valuable input. Several discuss symptoms like yours and even failed Fundoplication. You may find it valuable to review this and other discussions as you continue to wait for others to comment.

You mentioned having an endoscopy scheduled for earlier this month. What did you learn? How are you feeling?

1 ReactionHi Janell, thanks for checking. Since you asked, my endoscopy was normal. I won't go into any more details here but suffice it to say I can no longer take GLP-1 for weight loss..

2 ReactionsIam just wondering if there is anyone out there that has had a Nissan Fundaplication done?? So I had one done quite a few years ago like well over 10. This last 4 to 5 months I have had dreadful back pain which sometimes goes to my stomach gps keeps fogging me off saying it’s muscles . I have constant burbping i have never had this before it’s new. I cannot get on top of the pain now and cannot keep food down for over a week and a half. I am sick if I eat. I am short of breath it feels like pressure in my back does anyone think it could have failed all these years later
More than likely if it fails that you should revert back to the same symptoms that you had when it was done previously. Sounds like a different issue.
I had a fundleplication 12 years ago. My biggest problem is the inability to vomit and the resulting dry heaves
Yea I have got the same issues as before if not maybe abit worse. In the past i havnt been able to be sick. But now am vomiting the constant burning like feeling and burbing
@palepa
The guy made it too tight. You might look into a do over. I don't think I've had the need to cough up my cookies more than 3 times in 25+ years. It's difficult, but I can manage it some.
@traceskippy - welcome to Mayo Clinic Connect. I wanted you to know I moved your post here to a discussion where members were talking about a very similar subject as what you brought up in your post:
- Possible failure of Nissen Fundoplication (2021) https://connect.mayoclinic.org/discussion/possible-failure-of-nissen-fundoplication-2021/
Glad you connected already with @bajjerfan. Hoping you can also connect here with others who've participated in this discussion such as @jlharsh @ufoundme. Please also meet @jord @ranchwomen60 @joyceinil @terrijwright, who have also talked about this type of surgery in themselves or in someone they know. They may have some ideas on whether the back pain, shortness of breath, sickness when you eat and burping may relate to a failed Nissen surgery.
traceskippy - is anything providing some relief of these symptoms for you at the moment?
@lisalucier
I have not experienced any issues following my Nissen Fundoplication in New York State in 2012 at age 62.
As a child in New Zealand, ages 3-21, I suffered from Cyclical Vomiting Syndrome. At the time (1953-1971) the condition did not have a name. I vomited aggressively about one day every 42- 50 days. I was never hospitalized and recovered at home within 24-36 hours.
As an adult I developed severe heartburn and this surgery was prescribed. As a result of the vomiting my esophagus was found to be very damaged and the surgeon used my own stomach area tissue to shorten and repair my esophagus.
I have never seen the procedure mentioned on a discussion board such as this one but for me it led to significant weight loss and complete absence of heartburn.
I did ask my current doctor if patients ever reported reported any issues years later in their lives (i am now 76) and was told no.
