@brennankb55 The first time you take it you will be hard to wake up in then morning, you will be zonked out but after you get used to it, after 2 or 3 days then you will be ok, I have been taking it for over 15 years now and when I first started getting the dreaded neuropathy in my legs and feet, the pain was pretty much negative. Thats when I talked to my doctor and she said that I was lucky to have been taking it (amitriptyline). If you have pain then you might try it and see if it helps, of course it does not help balance which I have a hard time with.

@andy1942
How much do you take?

@andy1942 Thank you! I definitely need help with nerve pain. I have balance issues as well, but I think that will improve only by doing the right kind of exercises, consistently. Back in my 20s, I was put on Elavil to combat the migraine headaches I was having, but I didn't stay on it long because of the brain fog. Now that I know what that's like, I'll know what to expect. Besides, brain fog is easier to handle as a retired person rather than when I was working full-time. I greatly appreciate your comments. I'm going to give Elavil a try.

@andy1942 - You said it helps with the pain. Does that include the numbness and tingling? I've been battling this for 15 years and have found a few topicals that help calm the nerves at night, but not always.
