I shared this little book with my group on aging, and I would like to share it here too. It isn't often that a book moves me to tears, but this poem did just that.

The book is on Amazon, and I found it as a member of kindle unlimited. It is a poem about loss, but the result of which can be new growth. It is beautifully, and poignantly written, and I highly recommend it.

The title is "The Leaf That Was Afraid to Fall", by DB Stryker. Enjoy!

Do not go gentle into that good night,
Old age should burn and rave at close of day;
Rage, rage against the dying of the light.

Dylan Thomas, at his father’s deathbed

The poem goes on to speak of wise, good, wild, and grave men. But ends with a plea to curse, or shed tears, yet rage against the dying of the light.

I have recently re-read When Breath Becomes Air. A very honest memoir written by a young neurosurgeon who was dying of lung cancer. It’s very beautifully written!

I had a bout of insomnia, so I decided to write a poem to share.

Daybreak sun so bright & warm
Nightfall rainstorm so cold & dark
Drifting in a dream sleep
Restore our bodies
Rise N Shine
A new day dawns
Awaken our spriits
Come what may
Live with ease
Alive N Kicking

What a nice poem! It just says it all and so well! I love poetry and have written a couple poems myself. Do yours just come to you or do you think about them for several days? It's a good way to get your thoughts out without trying to write an entire book.
Thank you for sharing your poem! I enjoyed it!

Thanks PML for your thoughtful comment. I have been more fond of poetry since my cancer diagnosis. I have jot down words & sentences on a note pad occassionally. Seldom, I suffer from insomnia. I'll grab my cellphone and write poetry in my notes section. Do you like creative writing?

I feel like I am picking up my own pieces.
But I have to wear a mask, that hides the real me from other people
so they don't see how the real me is,
how I am broken into pieces,
how hard im trying to put myself together again
even though the world keeps breaking me
again and again and again
I don't want people to see
the broken pieces of me
so I hide behind this mask
hoping it will never slip
because if it does
they might see
how shattered I really am,
how Im still trying,
even when it feels like
there’s nothing left to fix
just pieces in my hands
that don’t fit the same anymore
and a mask I hold onto
so no one ever knows
how broken I’ve become

You are entirely welcome! I'm so sorry that you have cancer. I'll say a prayer for you. God will get you through it!
I do like creative writing. I'm like you as far as putting notes down and then creating a poem from them later. I'm 79 and have been writing all my life and even have been published quite a few times. However writing usually isn't the best way to make a living unless you write a book that becomes a best seller. I prefer to write my poems about real instances such as the poem I wrote about 9/11/01 entitled, "Heaven is crowded tonight." I'm working on another poem entitled "Saturday night at the Maple Brook Tavern". I actually went to the Maple Brook Tavern in my 20's and had a good time!
Keep writing! You are very good at it.
