Is there any chance of gallbladder stones?

Posted by obsessiveboy30 @obsessiveboy30, 2 days ago

My mom (55F) has pain in her upper right abdomen since last 11 days. The pain is constant and dull.

She cannot have kidney stones since there is no such smell from her urine.

The pain she experienced for 1st time (11 days ago) was sharp and stabbing. That's the only time her pain was sharp and stabbing. From then onwards, her pain in right upper abdomen have been dull and constant.

Sometimes the pain also moves to the left side of her navel. She has no issues with appetite or nausea. Sometimes pain also moves to her back (I mean right side back).

Doctor is unable to judge. He will see for 7 more days.

Why didn’t the doctor order some testing like an ultrasound or CT scan?
Did he do anything for her and why is he seeing her again in 7 days? If she has severe debilitating pain, take her to the ER where they will test for everything.
Don’t wait any longer and wind up being rushed to the hospital for an emergency. Also don’t goggle any AI information for medical symptoms.
Gallbladders can burst.

@imallears she regularly sees her physician every 3 months for her high blood pressure and lipid issue.

The last time she visited him (11 days ago), he thought it is due to side effects of medicine.

Two days ago, he prescribed her some syrup which is for heartburn, indigestion which he thought.

He will decide after my mom completes a week of that syrup.

I forgot to tell you that my mom's upper right abdomen feels tender to touch sometimes.

Regarding dull pain, sometimes it gets intense and sometimes it gets light. Still it stays dull for most of the time.

Doctor will gradually know. My mom is in touch with him online.

@obsessiveboy30 - when I had a gallbladder attack, it ramped up rapidly and steadily out of nowhere at a hair color appointment. I was in agony, worse than childbirth, and barely made it through my appointment.

Immediately afterwards I had my husband take me to the hospital. I only made it through till my surgery the next day in the hospital overnight because they gave me strong pain medication.

So, there was no relief for me till my gallbladder removal.

@obsessiveboy30, My gallbladder pain was sudden and intense. It felt like a vice around my lungs and I had trouble breathing. It came and went in waves. Once the attack was over there wasn't really any residual pain that I recall. I didn't have another attack for 7 years, and that happened after eating something high in fat (peanut butter, if I recall correctly). It was also very intense (and happened while I was driving, which was not great).

Does your mom's pain change if she eats a meal with a lot of fat? If so, then gallstones triggering a gallbladder attack could be a possibility.

@susanf8 my mom had a stabbing and sudden pain on 1st day only.

Sometimes it gets intense, but not stabbing like. I don't know whether her pain changes after fatty meal or not? It stays stable most of the time.

Yesterday, she had a junk food, then she had a coffee, then her pain increased and that pain shift to slightly left side of her navel.

Last year, she got her ultrasound done of her whole abdomen as a routine checkup recommended by doctor. No abnormal thing was noticed at that time.

It's really hard to say if it's gallstones, a lot of people have gallstones and never have a problem. And while there are "classic" symptoms, not everyone has them. I didn't.

I'd say avoiding foods with high fat content is reasonable until she sees her doctor. It won't hurt anything!
