@solarp Its like we're in the same mindset. In 2023 @ 57 years old, I found out that I had fractures in my spine. No falls or accidents. So my Nuerosurgeon suggested I see a rheumatologist & a DEXA scan. It showed slight bone loss in my spine. None in the hips. So I found a rheumatologist & was started on Evenity injections. 2 injections each month for 1 year. Then my Vertibrae cracked in half @ L4-L5.
Ended up having surgery & a cage & clamps put in. At the end of that year I had a new DEXA scan, with slight improvement. So then moved on to Prolia for 1 year. I healed from the back surgery but continued to have numbness in my calf & foot. Imagining looked okay. Im very fortunate to have a wonderful Nuerosurgeon, who said we have to treat the symptoms even though the Imagining doesn't show anything majorly wrong. Thank god he did.
In surgery he found a knuckle shaped bone that had grown in my spine, trying to push out my cage & pressing on my spinal cord. It took 5 hours in surgery to remove the bone to not cause any nerve damage. The bone growth is suspected to be the result of the Evenity treatment. Due to that is a side effect & a risk. My new DEXA scan now shows my fracture risk has went from 11% to 20%. Now I feel like I live in fear of fractures & future bone growths. Im not even 60 years old yet. Im a very active person & hands on grandma to 2 wonderful little boys 6 & 4. Im supposed to start another round of Prolia in May. But in my mind, is this enough. I read about the product Algea-cal. I started taking their Algea-cal Plus & collagen, this week. I feel like I can use all the help I can get. I pray it lives up to what it proclaims it can do. I try to keep the mindset that Hey, my problems are fixable. Alot of people's aren't. But I have days where I think, is this it for me. A life of fear of fractures, pain & surgeries. In my mind I feel like I'm 20 but my body tells me, Oh, no your not your 99. I fear, will I be in a wheelchair, in the next 5-10 years?? Also since all this has started & being in a back brace for a long period of time, twice. I've gained 20 lbs. Which I know puts more pressure on my bones & my self esteem/confidence has went in the toilet. Since my second surgery was just in January 2026, I'm still in the back brace but when I'm out of it, does anyone have suggestions for the best form of exercise to strengthen bones? Thanks for listening.

@sherridz66 Get a referral to a physical therapist who is specially trained in working with osteoporosis and your issues and do the exercises recommended. Building muscle is vital.

@sherridz66 I am so sorry you are going through this. I am 72 years young and was put on Prolia when I was about 65 years young when I was in the stage of osteopenia. After being on Prolia for 6 years I ended up with severe jaw pain that I assumed was TMJ. It was not. When I went to an oral surgeon to find out what was happening, he told me to get off of Prolia IMMEDIATELY. Jaw pain is one of the known side effects of Prolia. Last summer I started on AlgaeCal Plus along with the Strontium Boost. My doctor in Denver supports my getting on this program because he knows how adverse I am to taking Evenity and Prolia. In 3 months I will be going for a DEXA scan (which is the one year mark) and even if my scores have a tiny improvement, I will continue with my regiment. Sadly, Evenity, Prolia and so many other drugs/infusions can have horrible side effects so I'm not willing at this point to take any of them. I saw the bad effects the Evenity and Prolia programs had on a dear friend and I steer away from them!
Focus on getting exercise every day. Try light weights to strengthen muscles that will support your bones. I religiously have worked out all my life at least 5 days a week and my doctor feels that this is making a big difference in helping me with my osteoporosis. I will update everyone with hopefully good news when I get my next DEXA scan!
