Tininitus caused by gabapentin

Posted by cwallen9 @cwallen9, Jan 12, 2019

Has anyone had severe tininitus caused by gabapentin? I have been on 1200mg/day of gabapentin for a couple of months now, and I have had a severe roaring in my ears for about a month. I also have pain. I have been to an ENT and they say nothing is wrong. I saw one website that says that gabapentin is oxotoxic (bad for ears), but could not find any others.

I have been getting pulsatile tinnitus in my left ear after starting gabapentin. I had it before when I started taking Latuda for about 3 months but it went away. I'm still taking the Latuda. It's usually when I lay down. I hope it goes away. I'll update if it does. I would hate to stop taking it, because it's really helping with my anxiety, but it's driving me nuts!

I experience both tinnitus and blurred vision from Gabapentin. I have been taking 900mg per day for about 4 years now.

Some of my doctors acknowledge the connection, others claim they are not aware of these side effects.

I have had Tinnitus for years , however in 2019 my nervous system collapsed and the roaring started . Until then it was just ringing which I could deal with . This is causing much anxiety which I already have from what happened in 2019. I am 83 , thought my last years would be good ones but this is heartbreaking. I can't handle crowds, loud noises or to be startled. I take 4. .5 Xanax a day or I would be in a mental hosp. Just lost my husband and that doesn't help. I do clinch and grind my teeth which was told in beginning this was what was causing tinnitus. Had back surgery last Nov. and have siactica so was put on gabapenti. Yes, it is a mess, isn't it. My faith is really being put to a test. I won't give up and won't give up. But help would be such a blessing !!!! Hope my spelling is ok. God bless each one dealing with roaring in their ears . Thank you. Sorry for length.

In 2008 I had a molar tooth implant done on my lower left jaw. After about one month the implant broke in half leaving the lower half imbedded in my jaw. The periodontist injected a pain drug into my gum before starting to drill out the piece from my jaw, After about an hour of drilling I experienced pain to which he added another injection of more pain drug. At that time, I could feel a protrusion through my inner jaw with my tongue. He continued drilling for about another hour or less until he finally was able to extract the broken piece of implant out with a plier. Then upon driving home about a half hour later I began sensing this loud hissing noise in my head which I was told is tinnitus! It never stopped until about a year later when I had my first colonoscopy where I was given propofol. Afterwards, I went to a steakhouse with family where the noise of diners was loud until all of a sudden my tinnitus disappeared! I could clearly make out conversations three tables away, my hearing was back! Well, until one half hour later the tinnitus returned and has remained for 17yrs even after another propofol use. Soo, its the injection of a pain drug into a damaged trigeminal nerve that can cause severe tinnitus??!!

I have been on gabapentin for many years now. It’s been so long that I can’t remember how long it’s been. Definitely over 10 years. In the last six months give or take I’ve noticed a noise in my ears more like a white noise I guess. I take a very high dose of gabapentin daily of 2400 mg in the morning and 3000 mg in the evening. I have severe neuropathy in my arms to my hands and for my knees to my toes. Gabapentin is the only medication I take on a regular basis and I’m not sure that it’s causing the problem, but it’s the only thing that I could think of that might be. I’m only telling this story for the sake of others who might be reading it that I have the condition and I take gabapentin. This is not to say that gabapentin is the cause of my problem though.
