How are you managing long-term effects of pelvic radiation?

Posted by andwho @andwho, Feb 2, 2025

Was diagnosed with vulvar cancer stage 1b 1.5 years ago. Have been cleared but suffer from side effects from pelvic radiation. Doctors don’t talk about the side effects of radiation after treatment is over. Developed rectum prolapse as a result of my pelvic muscles being weakened. Can anyone share their dude effects if any?

Thank you!!
I am not using any steroid cream by prescription. Only over the counter things which sometimes I think irritate me more. Cortisone cream that is OTC does nothing. Vagisil helps but I still have inflammation & itchiness. Is there anything you can recommend? Thanks for responding!

@bobette1 Good to "see" you back here! Does the steroid cream work for you to quiet down the side effects? Or is there still some inflammation and itchiness?

Which steroid cream?
Is it over the counter?
Anything OTC you think might help?

I’ve only used over the counter cortisone cream.
Doesn’t help much. Still have inflammation, tenderness & itchiness.
Vagisil gives some relief but hoping there is something else that can bring more relief. Any suggestions?

I have all the same after effects. I was told this is my new 'normal'. I use a steroid cream for flare ups. Good luck!

I had stage 3 vulvar cancer in 2022-2023. I had surgery and had my grapefruit size tumor removed along with some lymph nodes. Then I had 6 weeks of chemo and radiation. I went to pelvic physical therapy and that helped some. My skin is still super sensitive and I put cream on it regularly. Definitely cotton underwear. I did ask at my last visit if my skin will ever be better. And I was told no this was my new normal. Let me know if you have more questions. As of November I am still in remission. I wish you the best.

@mobilepmc
I found pelvic radiation to not be painful, though the daily regimen could be mentally exhausting. I did not have any painful or itchy skin issues, and I did moisturize regularly.

@mobilepmc I had pelvic radiation, both external and internal (brachytherapy). Yes, the fatigue started about half way through the radiation sessions. I followed the advice of my radiation oncology team and kept as active as I could every day. That meant walking every day and I met with my personal trainer virtually two times per week. I think that helped greatly to keep my fatigue at a manageable level.
