Myofacial Pain Syndrome
Hi everyone. Does anyone out there suffer from myofascial pain syndrome? I get it bad in my upper back between the shoulders along the inside edges of my shoulder blades. I have these stubborn little areas of lumpy fascia that I can’t seem to get rid of no matter what. Moist heat helps and so does massage but only temporarily. I’ve also had trigger point injections and dry needling also providing only minor temporary relief. Stress and exercise that involves my upper back muscles also irritates the area intensely. Lyrica seems to help a bit as well as narcotic pain medications but I really don’t want to become dependent on these drugs. I can’t get rid of the multiple lumps and knots no matter what I do.

Cervical spine surgery eliminated my 30 year problem. It seems to be somewhat hereditary and the scoliosis in my lower back to the right pulls on the upper left shoulder area to the left. In addition, I am round shoulder and my shoulders hunched forward weekend the front side of my pectoral muscles so I have to be vigilant about staying in shape. A mayo, facial release therapist will help you knee down viable solutions. Don’t just try one. Try us several. What happens is your individual muscles get glued together by the sheets that cover the muscles and then move as a unit and tug on the connective tissue and eventually pull the bones out of whack. An MFR therapist will lineup your posture. I feel your pain! It took me 30 years to get down to the solution. Botox also helps as a temporary fix along with acupuncture and PT. But it was the surgery which lined up my neck spine so that the muscle muscles weren’t touching on my spine and shoulders.
@krits Interesting to hear about your baseball. I've had my facial pain for 11 + years. I had noticed sleeping on my fist was a help and then i made a wooden object to take the place of my fist, so that now acts as my teddy bear at night. Another home remedy is a piece of wood - a stick - about 30 " long which, while sitting i can prop it up between my thigh and places around my face to get pressure relief. This way i have 2 free hands to hold my book and read. Finally, i get much relief from wearing a sweat band on my forehead which i wear about 23 X 7 and it helps greatly with the pain. Hope these ideas give some of you some relief. If i find a cure, i'll let you know.
@wbc Thanks for sharing your knowledge. I will mcgyver something for my face pressure points. Do you put any kind of padding on the stick for your face ? Not scared of slivers ? Lol...maybe some duct tape ? Look at us being a couple of inventors 😉
Krits, I always use sandpaper on my "Sticks" to avoid splinters. No tape is necessary. In fact sometimes a sharp edge or corner feels good, a "sharp" feeling in some pressure points such as my eyebrows. That stick i use between my thigh and places on my face also helps between the arm of the sofa and other pressure points about my face. Hope these ideas help you.

Yes, I have suffered over two years following the trauma of a fall down some stairs that cracked two vertebrae. It took seeing orthopedist, two MRIs, PCP, finally a referral to a pain specialist who conferred with a Rheumatologist/arthritis specialist to get MPS diagnosis. I get some relief from working in a warm therapy pool and massage and dry needling, but it is all temporary. Also, I have been taking Cymbalta, Lyrica and anti-inflammatory meds, the latest being Celebrex, but still need Tylenol in between. I have accepted that it will be a lifelong issue but long for better control and am exhausted from trying. Also, it is requiring a number of lifestyle adjustments. 🤷♀️ my sympathies to anyone out there experiencing the same thing.
