Femoral Nerve Damage & Quad Atrophy – No Diagnosis, No Recovery

Posted by hermionegr62442 @hermionegr62442, May 30, 2025

Hi everyone,
Over 10 years ago, I developed severe atrophy and weakness in my left quadriceps. A neurologist confirmed 50% femoral nerve conductivity, but multiple MRIs and tests (including a visit to Mayo Clinic Jacksonville) gave me no clear diagnosis or treatment. PT didn’t help, and I still can’t do isolated quad movements. My left leg is visibly smaller than my right. There’s no pain in the leg, and it never builds muscle or gets sore. My other area compensate.

Over the past few years, I’ve fallen multiple times — twice resulting in broken bones — and I fell again today during a workout. I’m shaken and frustrated.

Has anyone experienced something similar? Any ideas, treatments, or doctors who helped you? I’m open to clinical trials, new therapies, or just hearing from people who get it.

Thank you.

I had left hip weakness for 1 & 1/2 years. After going to 5 doctors to no avail, my neurologist found out that I was claudicated & had a left iliac artery blockage. It was Awful as I was getting weaker & weaker, could hardly walk. You should have your doctor rule that out. The morning after surgery, I was able to walk like I never had a problem. I can’t tell you how Grateful I am to my neurologist as he finally figured it out. Everyone I saw told me it was my spine. Granted I have a terrible spine but my EMG was completely normal. I had vascular surgery & a stent placed in my left iliac artery. I also had thigh atrophy… it was a terrible & scary experience!!! I had no pulse in my left lower leg & no one but my neurologist really gave me a thorough exam!!! The vascular surgeon couldn’t believe my neurologist was the one who finally diagnosed me. It may not of course be your problem but after reading your post felt I had to post this. The Best of Luck to You!!!

@rb2
RB I am new to this group but was amazed to read your story about your iliac artery. Did you have abdominal pain during the mystery years when you didn’t know what was wrong?? Iliac artery compression often involves leg swelling and leg pain did you have that? Thank you for sharing I am grateful Alison.

@rb2 I did not have any abdominal symptoms or leg pain. I was told people can & do experience leg pain but my only symptom was weakness that worsened over time. I started noticing my thigh muscles were becoming emaciated but attributed it to my inability to walk for any kind of distance. It was a terrible & scary experience which was why I posted my story. Every doctor I saw attributed it to my spine but my EMG was normal. At that point, my neurologist told me he was totally against any kind of spinal procedure or surgery. Since I Trust Him with My Life, I said to myself ok but the weakness persisted. A few months later, I called him & said I can’t walk from one side of my bed to the other and I’m scared! He said I need you to come in. On his exam, he noted I had no pulse in my left lower extremity & my foot was cold. He said, you’re claudicated. At that point, he urgently referred me to a vascular surgeon there at the hospital. After having an u/s & CT, there was a blockage in my left iliac artery & was told I needed surgery for stent placement. As mentioned, after a year & a half of struggling to be able to walk, I underwent surgery & the following morning was able to walk like I never had a problem. If blood & oxygen aren’t able to flow freely from your iliac artery to either of your extremities, it spells Trouble! God forbid, I could’ve had a heart attack, stroke or worse & it took my neurologist to diagnose me!!! I have a terrible spine & who knows what might need to be done down the road but not until my neurologist tells me it’s time! I’ve been under his care for 20+ years & Couldn’t be More Thankful for the Care He has Given Me all these many years!!!

@aja65 I Hope All is Well with You! I had no abdominal pain or discomfort. I didn’t have leg pain either… just weakness that kept worsening. Just before I found out about the blockage, my foot was falling asleep, then my leg up to buttock several times a day which made it almost impossible to walk. I was really scared… absolutely petrified! My doctor said you didn’t complain of leg pain or cramping. Maybe some people do experience that but I didn’t. I’m so Grateful to my neurologist for finally figuring it out! I wanted to share my story in case there was someone else going through sudden onset of hip & leg weakness. I had a total hip replacement about 5 years before this happened… thought something was wrong the hardware… loosening or infection? I’m very Happy that wasn’t the case tho! Wish You the Best!

My son has a massive tumor that will be surgically removed next week, and he is going to lose his femoral nerve. How do people deal with the numbness, weakness, pain, and lack of function?
