How to change bag when showering without stuff spitting out?
I have had a bag since 2012 & where diapers &cathing. I do not go anywhere either. Have overactive bladder. Bad cervical spine surgery. C4-C7 with cage. Laminectomy & fusions.
My biggest concern is how do people take a shower without not eating all day to do to avoid spitting out stuff either way.?

Try first thing in the morning before eating or drinking anything. All it took was one small bite of food or a swig of a nutrition shake to activate my intestines. Wishing you the best of luck.

1 ReactionI keep the old bag on untill my shower is over and then change it. I use wet wipes to clean the area.
Get up, walk for 13 minutes. No ingestion of anything. Change bag... 🙂
I'm not sure what type of ostomy you have. I have an ileostomy, and when I shower without the bag on I just let any output go down the drain. I do have a hand shower attachment to kind of "chase" any effluent.
My method is to have a little table next to the shower with paper towels (I use viva paper towels for my changes). I'll step into the shower, remove the old appliance and place it in a disposal bag on the table. Then I'll shower and when I am ready to get out, take a paper towel and cover the ostomy with it to catch any output. I'll then proceed to the counter where I have my ostomy supplies ready for my change and put a fresh appliance on.
Hope this helps.

An ileostomy is where the end of the small intestine (ileum) comes through the abdominal wall. This can be permanent, if the entire colon is removed, or temporary, where the colon has not been removed. A colostomy is where part of the large intestine (colon) comes through the abdominal wall. Again, it can be permanent, or temporary.
For both an ileostomy or colostomy you would wear an ostomy bag - for ileostomy its got an opening where you can empty it because you have to empty multiple times a day. Some people with colostomies use a closed end bag because they only need to empty once a day.
If your stool is formed, I can see where it would be more of a problem when you shower. My output is pretty close to porridge, so its not hard to just send it down the drain if I have output when I shower.
You mentioned getting a plastic cover to use when showering. Has this helped you feel more comfortable showering?

1 ReactionYou know my stool can be formed and sometimes really loose it's different everyday and I use a bag that can be removed and the barrier be cleaned and a new bag put back on the barrier which doesn't happen to often I don't use the round plastic cover to often but does work you have to make sure you empty the water out of it before you get out of the shower.
I had about half my colon removed--the half that starts at the end of the small intestine. The same surgery gave me an ileostomy--meaning that the end of my small intestine that used to be connected to my colon, came out through my abdomen. My method for keeping clean was a tub bath, every other day, 1st thing in the morning before eating or drinking anything. I'd remove my ring and bag and take a tub bath. Sometimes a very small amount of "stuff" from the small intestine would come out during the bath--something like chewed food, not stool. It went down the drain when I emptied the tub. Once out of the tub I'd put on a new ring and bag.
Luckily for me, my ileostomy was reversed, i.e. reconnected to the remains of my colon.
