Partial obstructions, other issues weeks after bowel resection
Hi everyone! I'm really hoping someone can give me some insight. I have crohns, was diagnosed about 15 years ago. I never had any symptoms except for a fistula 15 years ago and then apparently I had inflammation which created some strictures in the small ilieum. I lived with that a year or two, and just had a bowel resection in February. The recover was great, no issues at all. I was eating great, normal bowel movements. Then at week 9, I ate something and within 30 minutes the top of my stomach started to feel crampy. Well, it really got worse overnight where it felt like contractions. I neded up going to the hospital, they did a CT scan and said I had a partical obstruction in the same place??? Then of course some air and inflammation which caused me to look 5 months pregnant. I stayed in the hospital for 4 days. I NEVER had this happen before. The surgeon said it could just be some inflammation and check it again in 6 weeks with my GI. I'm on a low residue diet and if I eat any sugar or anything, my stomach cramps. It's so frustrating to have a surgery to feel better.. and now I almost feel worse.
Has anyone gone through this? Is this rebound inflammation from surgery? I'm so bummed this is happening....

@hoagie I don’t know how you do it! I had obstruction every month after my bowel resection for 5 months. Which is why I was on liquid for 8 months. If I obstructed again I’d just have another resection. I hope things get better for you. Sometimes I think I just want another resection but I’m scared the scar tissue will come right back like last time

2 Reactions@ttheo I had one of those tests years ago but that was before my bowel resection. Might not be a bad idea but also I have a colonoscopy procedure next week to try and see the prolapse again if that’s the issue. Scans fight show much fir me.. only via colonoscopy

1 ReactionThe scar tissue on my bowels keeps growing. The doctors all say that if I have more surgery, more scar tissue will grow. I might get to be ok for a few months to a year. Maybe. But it will grow back again.

1 Reaction@hoagie sounds like we’re on the same diet. For me, it’s going to take some time to adjust. I run into stop signs every day.
@nfm - will you talk more about these stop signs?
@lisalucier I was referring to limited food choices. I’m on no fiber diet with small meals 5-6 a day. Shredded chicken, beef, hamburgers. No Cheerios. Items like these have just become stop signs. I’m on day 4 of this limited diet so I have to stop and think before eating.

1 ReactionI have had 4 SBO since completing radiation. I too am looking for answers. I have never had surgery so no scar tissue. I am being told this occurs from damage to my small intestines from the radiation. I too am on a low residue diet. I was doing good for 5 months then another obstruction. It’s frustrating.

1 Reaction@lisalucier My doctors tell me it's not going to get better. I have to do whatever I can to not end up in the hospital with more partial obstructions.

3 Reactions@islandgirl1961 I'm sorry to see that you're having these issues. All my doctors say that the radiation for prostate cancer treatment caused problems with my bowels. I guess it's radiation burns. At least they all agree on something. And they all seem to understand that I'm doing everything I can to stay out of the hospital.

3 Reactions@nfm Thank you for the kind thoughts. My doctor say that a big part of my bowel problem is in the area of my small intestine and large intestine. I guess it's called the Ileum. Where the small and large intestines are joined together. There are two parts of my small intestine that have kinds of twists that keep causing me bowel obstructions. The doctor do a gastrograph test where they put a slightly radio active dye down my nasal gastric tube. And then do an abdominal x ray. If it goes all the way through my bowels. Then I won't need surgery. If it doesn't. I'll need more surgery. The last time they did the test. It showed that my bowels were moving very slow. I can hear and feel my bowels making loud sounds and sometimes I get an uncomfortable pain on my left side. Sometimes other people near me can hear the strange noises my bowels make. Having the nasal gastric tube put down my nose isn't a big deal at least to me anymore. I know I'm most likely going to have one put in. The worst part for me is when the nurses have to put an iv in. I have lousy veins that are all squiggly instead of going straight.
