Has anyone found a foot brace that helps?

Posted by wolfie1 @wolfie1, Feb 17 1:50pm

I’ve had pn for over five years and have suffered from the shooting electric pain, complete numbness from my feet to my knees, and fingertips. This is such a battle physically, emotionally and psychologically. I have fallen more times than I can count and broken two bones. I had to give up driving and most of my independence. Now, I’m feeling my ankles are weakening. I can’t feel if my feet are flat as I get up and walk. I bought one of the plastic knee high ones but I don’t feel safe as it’s slippery…wondering if anyone has any advice? Sorry for the sob story but I have some really low days because of this.

Put an insole like an odor eater between your foot and the brace. Use the other odor eater for the other foot. Also wear slippers indoors. Make sure that your shoes will accommodate the brace. I like tie shoes as they worl better. I don't use mine anymore, but when driving I sorta have to put my foot where the accelerator pedal is supposed to be when driving. I usually don't have any problems otherwise.

Hi @wolfie1, Sorry to hear that you are struggling with walking. You aren't alone with the struggle as many members have commented on foot and leg braces. I did a search of Connect using "foot brace for neuropathy" so that you can easily scan through the discussions and comments from other members while you wait for members with experience to respond. Here's the search link with the discussions and comments: https://connect.mayoclinic.org/search/.

Have you thought about seeing a podiatrist to see if they can recommend a foot brace that might be more helpful and safer than the one you bought?

@bajjerfan thank you for the advice, I’ll try it. I was also thinking about putting some rubber tread in the base

@johnbishop thank you for the link John. I have talked to my pt about it and he put on me. It felt fine while I was there, I’m just having problems “ planting” my feet…

The AFO race is designed to help with foot drop and keeps you from tripping. You still need to make a conscious effort to try to lift your feet as you walk instead of maybe trying to shuffle your feet. I don't know of any way to get rid of that numb feeling. Maybe crutches would help.

@bajjerfan This is Quietriver , I started losing my balance' but found many things help getting it back. Most cures like they advertise the only thing I found it helped is cleaning out my wallet.
I started soaking my feet in Apple cider vinaget 1 cup-with epson saults 1 cup and about two gal of water. this I put in a plastic containet that one or two feet can fit in , mix it up put it in the micro wave 3-4 minnuets very warm but not to the point it burns you. Put a towel on the floor under the plastic container and soak my feet fifteen min each. This relaxes the feet, cure toe nail problems , takes some of the sorness out, after that is done I start start excersizing them the feet. Start slow about 10 min each foot bending the toes, then the foot then the ankle. and if someone is there to help you the flexing the foot is easier than doing it your self. then work up the leg flex the ankle, knee and the leg. I also I use a excersize rope that hooks on to the door and has pullies so you can hook on to it foth and use one foot to apply pressure to the other foot then reverse the procedure. This way I'm useing my own legs to one agaiinst the other. Apply a little to start and increase push pressure to one leg while other is pulling against you pressure on both legs at one time this starts building up the mussels in the legs, Another thing I use is a work out disc for seniors. . I use the Grow Young Fitness -Chair workouts for Seniors like I kinda am. This is a program that is voted #1 chair work out for senoirs. this program is also Beginner Friendly. Every one can use it there is 14 Different work out programs. and they start at about 13 min and you work up from there. These progeams give to a good start at Bulding up your complete body, balance, lungs and arms and legs to get you back into shape. I recoment this on as it is the one I started with. from there I started working on the toes and walking properly again. I don't fall or even start to any more and can trip on something and not lose my balance. I try to encourage seniors to lift their feet as the walk as sliding them across the floor in the house isn't the same as walking down the street where if you slide your foot you can trip and fall. Good luck on your endeavor to get your balance back..

quiet river my I sugest buying a good pair of shoes that have a good walking sole of rubber with tread that helps you keep your balance. Tennis shoes are good but wear out faster than a regular hard sole shoe I put a insole in my shoes and buy then 1/2 size larger as when I started getting older and not walking and running so much The feet change along with the rest of our bodies and I don't like hurting feet or bunions.

Except for the big toe I can't bend any of my other ones because I had hammertoe surgery on both feet. Because of CVI I'm still wearing compession stockings. They are thin so I wear regular low cut socks on top of them. The AFO brace ended up cutting a hole in the right side sock so that's another reason I quit using it.

The one good thing I can say is that my PN and numbness hasn't gotten any worse. I had endovenous chemical ablation on the left leg for the CVI. After 10 days of no compression stockings it felt like it was back to the same ol same ol.
If I could get some help dealing with my lower back issues I might end up being able to feel semi human again.

@wolfie1 you are welcome. I only use natural meds most of the time as they don't have side effects and I always try it before telling anyone about it. If I can help you in any way give a holler.
