Gabapentin side effects?

Posted by Sundance(RB) @sundance6, Apr 13, 2019

I am a regular on the Mayo Board! I don't know what I would do without it! Our doctors don't want to discuss openly the things about illnesses and side effets of drugs and other things. Anyway, my question to all of you is Gabapentin and it's side effects. I have been on it now for 6 months. My doctor raised me from 100mg. to now I am on 400mg. three times a day.
The problem is my tiredness! I happen to be in a friends office yesterday and she was taking some medicine. She said she was taking Gabapentin. I asked why and she said she had, had shingles back when and it still helped with the pain. I know the drug is percribed for many things that is why I take it for my issues.
I told her I had been taking it for about 6 months. She asked if I had been tired all the time, just out of the Blue. OF COURSE I SAID YES! She said it took her a year before she got out of the tiredness.
Let me know if any of you have experienced the same thing. Also let me know at what dosage you may be on? I know this is all confidential!
Again Thanks to The Mayo Clinic and Everyone who is kind enough to be open with their lives!
Sundance!

I was on gabapentin for only 1 week. Pharmacist was surprised because of all the allergies I have to fibromyalgia medicines. I was to take 200 mg morning and night . Pharmacist said start only with 200 at night. then, 100 morning and 200 night , then the 200 morning and night. I had many side effects, just like I did with lyrica. very tired, unbalanced, ended up with blurred vision.

I took it for a short while didn’t like the way I felt, do I stopped it.
Did u take the magnesium on your own or did your doc recommend it?

@jacklin I believe I took it on my own. I can’t feel that it does anything though. At one time I was taking two different types of magnesium…one to sleep (didn’t help) and one to generally help with brain function and stuff (who knows if it works).

I am glad I stumbled onto this site! Been taking 600 mg at night for PN. Been 7 months. All of a sudden I can’t walk right , uncoordinated and stiff legged once my legs get fatigued. Legs feel weak…….didn’t realize that could be a side effect.

The drug did not work for my pain, it just made me tired and lose interest in doing anything.

Reading over all the comments regarding Gabapentin side effects, I have to say that I seem to fit many of the side effects... tiredness, loss of balance, foggy-headed. Since I am on a pain pump, I am considering tapering off the gabapentin to see what happens. It certainly doesn't seem to be helping any with my pain.

I take gabapentin 300mg twice daily for sciatica!

A little tiredness which many say will subside after several months.

I’m going to check with my doctor to get the ok to try Tumeric (OTC/Online herb) WITH gabapentin.🤷🏼

@heisenberg34 I take 300 mg twice daily for my sciatica.

The loopiness and tiredness doesn’t kick in until about 90 minutes AFTERVi take the morning pill and it only lasts for a couple of hours.

However I’ve found if I start busy with chores/honey dooos, it doesn’t affect me as bad AND my brother, who has been on for 7 years, says it will subside a lot after about a year!🤷🏼

@1kay2 I, too, only took Gabapentin for a very short time (right after total knee replacement) thinking it would help with the pain. I then read up on the 'possible' side effects and got very nervous after reading them. One thing that started immediately was belching...I mean really loud belching..something I've never experienced. I decided to wean down off Gabapentin and titrated down VERY slowly (plus, I was only on 600 mg daily for only a few weeks) and it has been several months since I stopped it...But I still have blurry eyes (and I had cataract surgery on both eyes years ago and saw 20/20!) and the belching continues! Last night, I finally took a Nexium, and it did help!

@earthangel

That's how I feel about PreGabalin; like an emotionless blob. But hey it works so there's that.

@heisenberg34

If it doesn't help then don't take it.
