Hematuria from prostate and urethra: How do I stop the bleeding?

Posted by jerlaz @jerlaz, Feb 21 1:17am

I have blood in my urine every time I urinate. Ct scan and cystoscopy say bladder is good. Blood is coming from the prostate and the urethra. How do I stop the bleeding?

Hi @jerlaz ,
Really not much to go on here and I couldn't find any posts with any history or diagnosis.

When I had hematuria, it was caused by kidney stones. I was one of the lucky odd people that had zero pain with that, which led the urologist to do a cystoscopy, which like yours, was negative for bladder problems.

What in the CT scans led to the conclusion that it was from the prostate/urethra?
Have you had a recent biopsy?

Regardless, I don't think there's anything you can do to stop the bleeding. The underlying problem would have to be treated medically and time would, hopefully, heal whatever the problem is.

Best of luck to you!

Are you on blood thinners?
I have had a Supra public catheter for ten years with no problems until I started taking Eliquis, a blood thinner, now I regularly get blood in my urine.

Do you have BPH, prostatitis, UTI, urethritis, or prostate cancer?

What treatments have they tried?

Are you a doctor?
I have prostate cancer and experiencing blood in my urine each time I urinate. Currently on abiraterone with a dash of prednisone and quarterly lupron injections. I originally had radiation and lupron and was in remission for 2 plus years. I have had a CT scan, a cystoscopy, and a follow-up CT scan with contrast. I am awaiting a decision on further treatment.

@jerlaz No, not a doctor. But, after having been on this journey myself for 14 years, I’ve seen others with these symptoms in some cases.
Of course, having blood in urine is not a good thing. And having ruled out the bladder (with a CT scan and cystoscopy) helps narrow things down.
If they’re sure that it’s either the prostate or the urethra that are bleeding, then it’s not about just stopping the bleeding; it’s about diagnosing the problem involving the prostate/urethra and then planning the treatment.
Having already had radiation and ADT (what were your numbers back then and what were your treatments?), now that the cancer is back and you’re on doublet therapy (what are your numbers now)?

You mentioned that you are “…awaiting a decision on further treatment.” But, what is the diagnosis that will determine the treatment you’re waiting for? (The bleeding is simply a symptom of the problem; you have to still figure out the problem; only after that can you figure out a solution.)

@jerlaz I'll throw this out there, don't know if it has any bearing .... I just had a cystoscopy last week after a pretty alarming bout of hematuria. It was the first and only time this occurred either during or after radiation treatment and only lasted about 6-8 hours, but looked like pure blood to me. I DO have an issue with frequency and it can burn a bit sometimes... related? RT was for both prostate and rectal cancer and guess what lies between them? The Bladder. My urologist only found damaged tissue from radiation and otherwise the bladder looked good. He said I may have hematuria for the rest of my life because of it. It's been about nine months since radiation and this was only a one time occurrence, so we'll see how it goes. If it becomes a problem, he can offer a few solutions ranging from going into a hyperbaric oxygen chamber to permanent urostomy.
Also, UTI, kidney stones, and some other conditions have been ruled out after blood and urine tests. I will see my medical oncologist in a couple of weeks, more bloodwork and have an MRI scheduled, so hopefully I'll get a clearer picture of what's happening with the urethra and prostate. As of now, I have "no evidence of disease" as you did a couple of years ago, so I will be very interested in following this thread and wish you the very best of outcomes.

@jerlaz, how are you doing? Did you and your doctor find the cause of the bleeding and how to stop it?
