Anyone had low-dosage docetaxel? When does the fatigue end?
Hi Everyone,
My husband had a spinal cord tumor removed at T4. He has Stage 4 prostate cancer since 2023. Apalutamide wasn't working anymore, and he started Chemo this week. The Oncologist said they would start him at a low dose of Docetaxel as my husband was trying to get mobile after removing the tumor ...He was just starting to walk a bit more with the walker, but now he is so very very tired...When does the fatigue start to go away. He's at Day 6 now after the first treatment.
Also, I'm concerned about the 'low dosage'...I don't think this is doing us any favors...The cancer had obviously gotten worse..Anyone else had a 'low dosage' to start off with?

A lot of people get fatigue from chemo, for some, it is extremely tiring. This usually gets better after the 10th or 11th day.
I’ve heard of people that have had serious side effects from chemo getting lower doses to try to reduce the side effects. The thing is they end up giving you the same amount of chemo, Over a longer period of time, so the end result should be the same. Or more technically it will produce similar efficacy to higher-dose, shorter-term chemo.

2 Reactions@cal77, I can understand your worry about starting on a low dosage. When dealing with cancer, you want to hit it with all that medicine has to aim at it. Low dosage doesn't mean they are doing "less". Like @jeffmarc says, they are giving your husband the dosage that is right for him. Chemo comes with side effects. I assume they are giving him a dosage that he can tolerate, possibly over a longer period of time to have the best quality of life during treatment. These are good questions to ask the oncologist.
How is your husband doing? How often does he get chemo?
Thanks Colleen...He is getting chemo every 3 weeks, although we just saw the Oncologist after the first 3 weeks, and he is going to do a PSMA scan and maybe Pluvicto depending on how the next 2 chemo treatments go...Just hoping something works. His PSA jumped from 365 to 400 in the last 3 weeks so that's not good.
My husband(55) did docetaxel over the summer, 6 sessions 3 weeks apart.
Yes he was tired and took daily naps but didn't have any other symptoms.
He went to the gym almost every day and forced himself to do stuff.
Neuropathy disappeared in his toes after several months and hair grew back.
The tiredness gets worse with every dose but after it's all done he got back to "normal" after maybe 3-4 weeks. I don't remember but I do remember that the week before chemo he'd be ok then get hit with the chemo and a week or two of tiredness, if I remember correctly it was close to day 5 after a dose that he was more tired, though the first few days he stayed away from people too so it was almost two weeks of if then week 3 was fine and he'd start again.
Now 6-8 months later he's "fine" but cancer and chemo and ADT aged him, also mentally!

1 ReactionGood to know...thanks.
Yes, I will agree cancer, chemo, ADT aged my husband too, especially mentally, it's all really stressful and scary
We just hope the chemo works and his PSA goes down...Right now, it's still going up and is up to 400.
They will do a PSMA test early next month and then we'll see about maybe Pluvicto..
