JOHN: What brought you to Mayo Clinic Connect?

@heyjoe415: It was 2022 and I had two very arthritic and painful knees. I was 68 at the time, and I was looking for similar experiences and suggestions.

JOHN: What motivates you to take part in the community?

@heyjoe415: While I first came for advice, I now enjoy helping others on health topics I have experienced.

JOHN: What about Mayo Clinic Connect makes you feel comfortable to share and to be open with the community?

@heyjoe415: A lot of trust comes from the solid reputation Mayo Clinic enjoys. The people on Mayo Clinic Connect are genuinely looking for help, or providing help. It’s comforting to belong to this community.

JOHN: What support groups do you participate in?

@heyjoe415: I spend most of my time with groups dealing with joint replacement, like the Joint Replacements support group and Bones, Joints & Muscles. I’ve had both knees, my right hip, and left shoulder replaced – all very successfully. I think I have a lot to offer to these groups, as well as a lot to learn from the members.

I also participate in groups dealing with Mental Health and Depression & Anxiety. I started getting panic attacks at age 18, along with chronic depression, obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD). I’ve gotten help and much relief from these issues. I like to share my experiences when they can be of help to others.

JOHN: Tell us about a meaningful moment on Mayo Clinic Connect.

@heyjoe415: Well, a mentor @sueinmn in the Bones, Joints, & Muscles group has cited me a few times. She has also asked for my input and shared her own extensive experiences.

It’s nice to be noticed by other members as well as the group mentors. It reinforces that my input is valued and encourages me to continue.

JOHN: What surprised you the most about Mayo Clinic Connect?

@heyjoe415: People are unafraid to hold back. I’m a recovering alcoholic with 14 plus years sober. In the Addiction & Recovery support group I find a lot of hope for myself, and in turn, like to think I’m helping others.

JOHN: What energizes you, or how do you find balance in your life?

@heyjoe415: I’m a very curious person. I’m retired now and get up at 5AM and spend several hours checking email, but primarily engaging in meaningful social media sites like Mayo Clinic Connect.

JOHN: Tell us about your favorite pastime or activity.

@heyjoe415: In addition to getting up early and reading a lot, I’m in the gym 7 times a week. I took up spinning after my knees were replaced in 2022 and love it. I can’t run anymore, so the rush I get from endurance exercise keeps me physically and mentally focused.

I also work with a personal trainer twice a week and have for the last four years. Tyler has helped me immensely to prepare for and recover from joint replacement surgery. I highly recommend the use of a personal trainer, even for a short time. These trainers are invaluable, and especially helpful on form — the correct way to do any exercise.

JOHN: Do you have a favorite quote, life motto or personal mantra?

@heyjoe415:

“We shall not cease from exploration, and the end of all our exploring will be to arrive where we started and know the place for the first time.” T.S. Eliot

JOHN: Puppies or kittens?

@heyjoe415: My wife and I had five cats who all lived between 17.5 and 20 years – Weezie, Pete, Bunny, Zuzu, and Mokey. They were all rescue kitties and they added so much to our lives. We adopted two rescue kitties in 2024 – both female, Iggy and Poppy. They provide a great deal of energy to our household. The picture above shows me holding Iggy, at 4 months old.

@heyjoe415 - Thank you for letting us get to know you a little better and for all of the experience and support you provide for other members! I had 3 cats at one time but now down to one little rescue from my neighbor who had to give her up when her 5 year old son was found to be allergic to cats. Love the photo! Kitty looks comfy in your lap. I have to be careful with mine because she has sharp claws and tends to dig them in when she jumps off of my lap. Happy Thursday!

@heyjoe415 Hi Joe! I LOVE everything you have said here. It brought a smile to my face and joy to my day. Really glad you're here in this wonderful community! Glad to meet you!! 🙂

@heyjoe415 Wow, I'm so happy to see you in the "spotlight." I have enjoyed working with you in the joint replacement group and watching how encouraging and upbeat you are with people who come to Connect scared and overwhelmed by the prospect of major surgery.
Thank you for all of your contributions.

Hi Joe. Well done in dealing with so many issues in your life with such positivity. I couldn't agree more with the need to keep fit, and a personal trainer is a great way of achieving this.
I liked your favourite quote. This reminded me of a joke about Christopher Columbus who when he set off didn't know where he was going, when he arrived he didn't know where he was, and he did all this on a government grant. This proved that he was an economist and not a sailor.
All best.

@heyjoe415: I've never heard that quote before, a lot wisdom to unpack there! I'll be joining the joint replacement folks at some point likely later this year so perhaps I'll be meeting up with you in there after my total hip surgery. Keep up the great work with the cat rescue work. I had cats growing up and now I joke that one of my dogs would transition to a cat if she could!

I enjoyed reading and learning about you. I have seen you post on several of the pages I am also a part of. Congratulations on sobriety. I also am in recovery for 8+ years and although shit gets hard, it is so much better now than when I was actively drinking and using. I also share your love of animals. Over the years, I have rescued many cats and dogs. At the current moment, I have two dogs and two cats. I told my friends, when I pass, to just put all the urns of my four pawed children, that I have had over the years, with me. Animals are wonderful and love unconditionally. I love the picture with you and your tabby baby. Thank you for being a part of all the groups. I look forward to hearing from you again. Just for today!

Here is a crazy picture I took of all the cats I had years ago. Four of those passed within the last year within months of each other. I believe they wanted to be together. They lived long and good lives.

Hello @heyjoe415

We have met in other discussion groups on Connect, and I've always been impressed with how compassionately you post with others! I just love that you take in rescue cats. I'm a kitty lover, too, but I only have one. Probably if I lived in a bigger place, I'd have more. Your cats have lived a long time; they must receive plenty of love, attention, and care.

I'm so glad that you found Connect and are actively sharing with others!
