How do you cope with the pain?

Posted by pennycurious1 @pennycurious1, Feb 11 9:15am

I am 57 years old, have led a highly active live with daily sports until a few years ago, when I started having pain in my left foot. I underwent several therapies including acupuncture trauma, which caused a nerve reaction. Since then, that was Sept 2023, I have not had a single day without pain.

I have been suffering pain in my feet, legs, hands and tongue for more than 3 years, moving up to my upper back now. After countless doctor consultations I have at last been diagnosed with SFN. Further blood testing is in process to find the cause and to explain the muscle pain. I have been told to contact a pain management center - have to wait 3 months for an appointment. My feet are chronically inflamed, extreme pain, as soon as I put weight on them, bone marrow edema up to the tibia, develeponig ostheoporosis.

In the past I have tried all sorts of pain meds, from OTCs to steroids to medicinal THC - nothing worked.
Pregabaline was a nightmare, no pain relief, weaning off it difficult.
Now I am supposed to try Gabapentin, but I am so tired and scared of trying yet another drug and having to endure the side effects on top of the pain.

The pain is eating me up. Only moments of laughter or crying for an hour in bed can sometimes give me relief.

How do you cope with chronic pain?
How do you keep up a positive attitude towards the future, knowing it will never get better?

I have lots of nerve pain and tried all kinds of meds and therapies. Gabapentin has helped tremendously. Even makes me more functional as is loosens tightness and helps pins and needles and pain. I’d recommend trying it. I had to ignore peoples comments on how bad it is. It’s about quality of life. God bless and good luck.

I’m so sorry you’re dealing with the pain. I’ve had severe chronic pain in my thoracic and lumbar spine for eight years. I see pain medicine @ Mayo Clinic in Jacksonville Florida. I also see a Neurologist @ Mayo. I tried Gabapentin for several months but had to stop taking it because of all the swelling and memory loss. I will tell you that it did help my pain but I couldn’t tolerate the side effects. Here’s my thought… if I were you I would definitely take it. It will help you until your appointment with pain medicine. Then you and your doctor can discuss other options if you’re having any side effects. Can you get on a cancellation list with pain medicine? I remember waiting for my appointment with my pain medicine doctor. I had to go to the emergency room so many times. I think in the months before my appointment I had gone to the ER fourteen times! Literally. Fourteen. The doctors would ask my husband if I was a drug seeker (so prepare yourself for that.) He had to explain what was happening and that I had an upcoming appointment @ Mayo. If you need to, call your primary doctor and see if she can get your appointment scheduled sooner. I truly hope you can get relief from your pain soon! 💖

As someone who feels very similar to you, you have to keep going because you deserve better, you keep trying the meds, you keep doing all the stuff that feels stupid, because one of them will at least give you a little bit of yourself back, you’ve got this

I have lupus and it increases the inflammation in any part of the body, especially after surgery. Sometimes my body lights up with pain. I take gabapentin and it is very helpful. I usually take it for up to 3 months once I start with it. Right now I am taking 300mg in the AM and PM. I have never had a problem with it. Good Luck.

If the pregabulin didn't work the gabapentin won't help either. Very similar drug. I wouldn't take it. The Dr should know that. Try something else. Lyrica won't work either. Again similar drug
Good luck.

I’m so sorry to hear your story, I suspect that gabapentin won’t help it’s never worked for me!

Having to live in chronic pain fucking sucks, but what can you do? I mean really do? We all know the answer to that question when dealing with the same thing every day over and over again. PAIN. I haven't had a day without pain for over 30 years. First it was osteoarthritis in my left knee, then in both knees, then my hips. Arthritis runs in my family unfortunately, so we've all had to deal with it.
Then a little over 10 years ago I started having pain and numbness in my feet after I got home from work. Fast forward to now, I was on disability(SSDI) for 10 years due to the pain from the neuropathy in my feet, along with the arthritis in practically every one of my joints.
Having to live in chronic pain drains you physically, emotionally, and mentally, and some days you just want it to stop. Trying to get others like friends or family members to understand what we're going through seems to be almost impossible. We're not the same person we were before this all started to happen.
The only things that keep me going, that won't let me give in to the obvious solution that would cure this is my family. I'm very lucky to have a wife that cares for me, and would do almost anything to help me get through my bad days. We have 2 adult children with families of their own who've given us 4 awesome grandkids. In fact, today is our oldest granddaughter's 18th birthday(damn I'm old). And I listen to music for several hours everyday, loud, heavy, aggressive metal music to help me drown out the pain.
Try to find something ( easier said than done)to take your mind off of your situation.
