Waiting for biopsy results, of course I’m freaking out
My annual screening mammogram showed architectural distortion so I had a diagnostic mammogram and ultrasound. They showed architectural distortion, focal asymmetry and calcifications so a biopsy was recommended. Had a stereotactic biopsy last Friday and I’m waiting for the results. I thought I would have the results by today but now I’m just freaking out knowing I have another weekend to get through without knowing what’s next. Anyone have a similar situation? Or advice to keep me from constantly googling? I haven’t said much to my husband because he got laid off last March and I don’t want him to feel worse or worry any more than I know he probably does. I think I’m just looking for support. Thank you.

Hi! Maryanne:
I am so sorry for what you've been through lately:( My heart with prayers went out for you upon reading your post...
Surely most of us probably agree that the waiting time for the biopsy result is the most stressful and challenging during our journey of fighting the disease of breast cancer. Please take a deep breath and reflect upon what are the pleasant things that you enjoy most and pamper yourself upon them. Perhaps watching the Malino Cortina 2026 Winter Olympics to take your mind out of the worrying zone? Or watching the upcoming super bowl 60 with your husband and loved ones? Listening to soothing music to calm your mind?
Our thoughts and prayers are with you to accompany you through this journey, my friend! Better journey ahead to all!

2 ReactionsYes, I hate the waiting time and agree with life traveler. Try to stay busy, walk or do something that involves whole body movement, probably not the time for reading or even meditation, unless you can meditate better than I can. I usually try to take a hike and push myself to exhaustion.
Remember that even if something is found; this means early early detection. As one radiologist told me this will be good news no matter what they find, either it was caught early or there is nothing there.
Try to embrace that this will be good news, and you are very lucky, no matter what is found.
General information for mainly others reading this:
These findings—architectural distortion, focal asymmetry, and calcifications—together represent areas of density or structural changes in the breast tissue that appear different from surrounding tissue and are not fully formed masses. They are, in combination, considered suspicious, often indicating potential malignancies like ductal carcinoma in situ (DCIS) or invasive cancer, though they can also be caused by benign conditions like scarring or cysts.
Architectural Distortion: The normal breast structure is distorted, pulled, or "spiculated" (appearing with radiating lines), which is concerning because it can indicate a tumor pulling tissue inward.
Focal Asymmetry: A specific, new, or persistent area of dense tissue seen on only one mammogram view.
Calcifications: Tiny mineral deposits in the breast. The shape and distribution (e.g., clustered) are more important than the presence of calcium itself, as fine, linear, or branching shapes can be indicative of malignancy.
Meaning: These findings are generally classified as BI-RADS 4 or 5, meaning a biopsy is recommended for definitive diagnosis because these features can be early signs of breast cancer.
Common Causes
While these findings are suspicious, they do not automatically mean cancer. Possible causes include:
Malignant: Ductal Carcinoma in Situ (DCIS), Invasive Ductal Carcinoma.
Benign: Postsurgical scars, radial scars, benign sclerosing lesions, or fat necrosis.
Hello Maryanne, lifetraveler gave you excellent advice! And I do reinforce her posting 🙂
As easy as it is to say "think positive" I know so very hard to do...but worrying about it, going into the future, thinking the worse, wondering what will "I do?", what all the "if's" are, right now, in the present moment, all a waste of your emotional energy. Right now, in this present moment, your biopsy results are not under your control.
Do try to accept this. Do try to place your mind in a calm state. What will be will be and you WILL be able to handle it one step at a time "IF" the results are positive. BUT it is an unknown at this time.
So, you must wait a bit longer. Do try to enjoy the weekend, take lifetraveler's advice on things to do today and tomorrow. I don't know if you are a woman of faith, but if you are, place all in God's hands or your Higher Power. Give this burden to Him/Higher Power to lessen your worries now - in this present moment.
Hang onto Faith. Control the controllable. Biopsy results are now out of your hands. You had the testing done...that WAS in your control. The journey of breast cancer is literally one step at a time...BUT in this present moment - it is not known IF this will even be your journey.
So, one moment at a time...remember, IF your results require further testing, follow up with medicine - you WILL be able to handle it all. One step at a time. You will get through this period, in this present moment.
Take lifetraveler's advice. And, yes, our thoughts and prayers are with you...control the controllable.
And, in this present moment, you CAN control your emotions to help you feel better...please do that.
You will always have support here.
Blessings.

2 ReactionsOne thing I read to help your mind during the whole cancer process was to learn to do something new. It can help distract you from something you have no control over.
Crazy as it sounds, it worked. I bought a tin whistle for $12 and learned to play Irish jigs. I laugh now as I read that but it really did help and I felt that I was accomplishing something.
