Cramping at main scar 15 months post robotic prostatectomy

Posted by etcher06 @etcher06, Feb 5 1:07pm

Started experiencing cramps and a lump at the belly button scar of my robotic prostatectomy, which I had about 15 months ago. If I lay down I can rub out the cramp and lump. Has anyone experienced this? Any thoughts? Thanks.

Oh my : (((, it is possible that you now have umbilical hernia. I am not a doctor, but it really sounds like it. It is not unusual to get it after any laparoscopic surgery since probes weaken abdominal muscles in places where they go in during surgery.

Please visit your doctor as soon as possible for proper diagnosis and treatment. In the meantime do not carry anything heavy under any circumstance or strain in any way.

@surftohealth88 Yup, that’s probably it; could be ‘incisional’ hernia also but the outcome is the same.
I have one in the same spot and I’ve found that over time (4-5 years) it has improved. But if yours is painful or protrudes when you stand you really need to get that fixed; you don’t want it to strangulate and cause even more problems.

Just read this post. I am a bowel surgeon. Dealing with my own prostate cancer.
It sounds like you have a ventral hernia. It needs to be looked at since it is symptomatic.

I had ventral hernia repair done a few years prior to prostatectomy and the surgeon used the same incision to remove my prostate. The symptoms for the ventral hernia described here match my experience.

I like "surtohealth's" response of a possible hernia. Do you recall lifting something heavier than normal recently? Usually men know exactly when they have caused a hernia, but it is possible not to know. I was worried myself about the post-surgical "thick lump" under my 2 - 2 1/2" single incision (about 2" below my navel). It was there slowly reducing in size for at least 7 months. I really have no remnants of it now. I hope that will not be a point of vulnerability for herniation or future rupture of the scarred abdominal muscles. Keep us posted with a follow-up about what your physician diagnoses. Good luck to you.

Thanks to all that have replied. Great information. I will be following up with my physician and once I get an actual diagnosis, will post that for anyone's future reference.

@bfg1 That’s interesting…he actually cut thru the repaired area?
Was there mesh involved in the hernia repair?
How is that area doing since the RARP?

He actually cut through the same exact spot where the hernia repair was done. No mesh. He , my surgeon at Brigham and Women’s hospital, told me before the RARP that he would use that scar. I also have 5 additional small scars from the instrument incisions. All of these plus the approx 2 inch scar just above my belly button have healed very well. I’m about to turn 70 and the RARP was 10/1/21

@heavyphil , yes, My surgeon at Brigham and Women’s hospital told me before theRARP that he would use that same scar to remove my prostate. There was no mesh and I knew this. That scar is about 2 inches and is just above my belly button. All RARP scars have healed very well and RARP was done 10/1/21 at age 65. I am about to turn 70 now.

@bfg1 That’s amazing to me; you’d think they might want to avoid an area already compromised ONCE, and here they go right back in again…🤔
Well, you’re doing well so the results
Speak for themselves! Best,
