Hi- I had something similar that started 2 months ago, was always worse in the morning. Deep massage on my trap and neck helped temporarily, but was not lasting. I finally discovered that if I slept with a heating pad on my shoulder and neck it was not as bad in the morning, and I would massage it throughout the day. I saw a chiropractor who did massage with active release which also helped a lot. i sleep with a very small soft down pillow that I mainly use to support my neck which also has helped. Sleeping on my back is best. The best i can figure out, this started due to a bad shoulder (rotator curl tears) that kept me from sleeping on my left side, so I was instead only sleeping on my right (my pain is on the left side)
@heartnurseva So sorry you’re in pain. Ask for an MRI if it doesn’t improve. There are a lot of issues that can cause this pain trajectory that cannot be seen on an x-ray.

I sympathize with you. I have exactly your symptoms but also a severe pain at top of the neck behind the right ear. I have been doing exercises from Internet sites but very little success
This all happened 18 months ago when I was carrying two heavy bags one in each hand.
I will be keeping you in my prayers. Matt.
