Has anyone else experienced dull pain in buttock after hip replaced?

Posted by bart12mike @bart12mike, Feb 8 6:42am

Nine years after my right hip was replaced (and a ton of tennis and standing in streams, fishing) I developed a dull throb in my right buttock. After it intensified this past summer, I was told it could be SI joint pain. Went through injections for SI but no help. Saw a very knowledgable chiropractor and he believes the hip is slightly off somehow. So we're working on muscle strengthening.
But after three months of pt strengthening, I wonder what else I can try! This isn't 100%; it might be 60% better with pt. Anyone else with similar experience? Thank you!

I have the same issues, but no information on what helps. I've had both hips replaced. On the right side I had aching/pain for maybe a year after. It lessened and got to the point that I mentally blocked occasional aches. it's been 10 years since the surgery and the discomfort has returned while I have ben dealing with the reverse shoulder procedure, rays of the hip showed the componets were stable and nothing in the surrounding area was notable. Walking seems to be the best coping mechanism for me. The pain is mainly occurs when I'm not when I'm not moving, ie sitting or standing. When it affects my sleep lidocaine patches help. If it bothers me in daytime and I feel whiney about doing something I use a roll on that contains lidocaine and phenol.Some times it doesn't bother me for a couple of months.
So I can validate what you are going thruogh, but other than sharing how deal with it in the moment, I got nothing, The surgeons, physiatr ists don't have any useful information about the cause. Chiropractic adjustments help. Background on me - 71 yr old male , both hips replaced, right shoulder replacemnet lasted 17 yrs, leading to a reverse shoulder 14 mints ago.
Keep moving!

@bart12mike Who suggested SI pain? Have you had any imaging done to determine whether there is extraordinary wear or displacement? Finally, do you know what type of implant you have? Some metal-on-metal implants can have excessive wear over time that causes pain.

Hello @sueinmn -
I was seeing my orthopedic for my other hip (LEFT); and I complained of buttock dull pain. I was sent to a specialist on SI joints; they did only an x-ray; I then had an injection of lidocaine to see if there was any sort of relief; but as I told them post injection, I do not have the pain all day long, it comes and goes. Even so, I followed up with a cortisone injection that did nothing. I have been using PT exercises and that has given me about 70% relief. And now the chiropractor I'm seeing who believes it is my replaced hip and NO I don't know what type of material the replacement is. I think it was a ceramic but I will check. Thanks for those questions.

@bart12mike I'm sorry you are in pain. Your pain sounds familiar to my husband's after hip replacement. I suggested to PT to treat him for nerve damages manifesting directly behind the hip replacement on buttocks. I told PT my story after breast cancer surgery.
PT used tens unit 2's a week for 4 weeks placed strategically to treat nerve pain in husband's buttocks. It worked, taking the pain away! Its been over a year of pain free since treatment. Just recently the same pain is starting up again when he stands from prolonged sitting. Likely he'll return for tens unit treatment.
FYI i had nerve pain in my back directly behind where breast surgery was done. PT used ultra sound on my back 2x's weekly for 6 weeks. All pain in back stopped, never returned. It been 10 years.

@bart12mike If PT is helping at all - and you say almost 70% - that pretty much indicates pain of muscular or tendon origin; if it were the joint you’d have minimal, if any, relief.

@heavyphil Thanks for that info!
My chiro says the replaced joint might be slightly off after 11 years of wear and tear... So we're working on strengthening that area. 70% is when I have rested it for a day, so that I can walk and play tennis or stand in a stream and fish! 🙂
I'll keep working on this.
