Undecided choice of drugs for Osteoporosis

Posted by peace44 @peace44, Oct 10, 2023

I am 80 years old women and have borderline osteoporosis which affects my entire body. My doctor wants me to take Prolia and the Rheumatologist wants me to take Reclast. I’m unhappy with both choices as the side effects are great and I do not tolerate new drugs well. I am very undecided and am considering doing not taking annty drugs for this condition. I have never had a fracture and I’m very active Any opinions or advice.

@blowsmeaway2 you seem rather negative by your two posts? This site is member driven and except for inappropriate posts I don’t think it’s monitored by anyone from Mayo other than volunteer mentors. You say you had a drug reaction when you were 4 & 1/2? Why bring it up now? And concerning MK7/K2 please read!

jenasky, @blowsmeaway make the point that pharmaceuticals can cause harms that we don't always get warnings about and references she her own childhood experience. She knows about vitamin K2 and calcium though her own research and thinks it curious that we don't get advice on that through our physicians.
Mayo connect does have monitors who are also members (to a one with great advice) and a post can be unkind or even incorrect and remain. Blows' post was deleted because she used direct address instead of couched phrasing --"perhaps" or "you might consider."
To her point we are a little heavy on the pharmaceutical side here. While I'm on the pharmaceutic side, I never considered not taking a strong osteoporosis drug, I do think both fields of thought should have presentation.
To your point about negativity, there is much about osteoporosis that is negative. Maybe the most important aspect of this site is honesty of expression.
Gently, brother.

I just turned 74 yrs old. My doctor prescribed Fosamax for OP. I took one dose the first morning and had a "strange" diarrhea later that day. I have now researched and read reviews on Google as well as reports of people on this format (thank you Mao Connect for this awesome website!). I am shocked that the side effects include causation of thigh bone breakage and brittle bones. My heart goes out to the people who have had jawbone deterioration and teeth breaking off after being on Fosamax for years.
I have decided to forego the Fosamax. I plan to include bone broth and Andrew Lessman's Marine Collagen in my diet, as well as the supplements Vit K in form of MK-7, dicalcium maltrate, magnesium, D3, and boron (helps absorption of calcium). I just found a supplement called Calciven that contains all those. I am walking everyday and plan to have a bone density test in a year to monitor any progress.
I am thankful to all who have shared their experience and info. I wish everyone a blessed journey.

I have followed your wonderful advice regarding a natural osteoporosis path. I researched collagen, Calciven, broth plus strength training exercise. I found another product called Algae Cal. I wonder if that would be better than Calciven?? I did have some heartburn from Collagen using one scoop. I’m starting over with one tsp so hopefully my body will adjust. I really want to give the natural methods a try. Since I’m 80 I don’t want to experience some of complications by adding new drugs to my body. I declined Fosamax, Prolia
and Reclast. Thank you for following a natural path.

I also declined the above drugs. I am taking Calciven and looking at Life Extension Bone Restore Elite. .y Dr wants me on 1200 mg calcium and 2000 IU vit D. I am concerned about taking that much as a problem has been shown with CVD and calcium. Also too much vit D can be toxic over time. I like the amounts in these 2 supplements as well as getting it from my diet. Has anyone any thoughts
on which one is better?
My last dexa scan a month ago took me from osteoporosis to osteopenia but I haven't been on Calciven long enough to make a difference. I work hard lifting in our barn which helps too.

Hello,
I am trying to decide which supplement is better. Calciven or AlgaeCa? Anyone with experience with these? I would really appreciate any feedback! Thank you!

Has anyone had severe bone pain after receiving a Prolia injection? I have been on Prolia for 3 years for osteoporosis. My bone density scan is the best it has been in years. After my last injection, I have really been experiencing lots of back pain where I had extensive surgery for scoliosis. My endocrinologist suggested I may want to switch to Reclast, but I am worried about side effects there. Just wondering if any of you have had back pain after a Prolia injection and how long this could last if this is the proble.

I have had Reclast infusions over several years with no side effects. I wish the same to you.

@susanjane77 May I ask if you have been able to maintain/improve bone density?

@harborside24 My osteoporosis has been now diagnosed as osteoarthritis. My endo switched me to Prolia. I have taken 3 shots and will not know if there is any improvement till my next DEXA scan which is in June. Unfortunately, my insurance will only cover the scan every 2 years. I am having the Prolia has worked and my bones are stronger.

@clemsonbabe sorry to hear about your pain. Why switch from Prolia if your scan has shown great results. It is working! I am not a doctor but I am also on Prolia and have not had one side effect. My back really ached a few months ago and my orthopedic doctor took an X-ray of my back. Turns out that arthritis has invaded my back but he said it is the scoliosis in my back that is causing the pain. I was on Reclast and had to switch to Prolia. My doctor stated that you can only take Reclast infusions for a few years but Prolia is for life. Please check to see if arthritis is now in your back. I really don’t think it is the Prolia causing the pain. Good luck!

@susanjane77
Thanks for your reply. I have made the decision to stay on Prolia. I do not think my back pain is from the shot. It probably is from arthritis. I just hate to have to take pain meds and muscle relaxer, but it is what it is. Am thankful I can sleep all night with no pain and do most of the things I enjoy doing. Travel is hard, but I push myself. Thanks for your encouragement!
