Role of Fish Oil in Reducing Cancer Growth (study)

Posted by miked77 @miked77, Feb 5 4:54pm

A recent study comparing a group of men on active surveillance taking a Fish Oil capsule with a similar group not taking Fish Oil showed the Fish Oil group had a 15% reduction in a measure of cancer cell growth while the other group had a 24% rise. The Fish Oil group also had guidance about eating healthier food while the other group did not get food guidance. (Source: Journal of Clinical Oncology, March 2025)

My recommendation is to get a QUALITY Fish Oil Capsule. Mine is sourced from Norwegian waters and tested thoroughly (more expensive than those cheap ones).

Good result after one year, but they really need a longer study. If you read further in the results, there was NO difference in PSA, tumor length or grade group in the pre and post biopsies done 1 year apart.
So yes, one tumor marker decreased by 15% but the overall picture, not so much. We really need to know what happens after 3-5 years; do the results stay the same, get better in terms of tumor shrinkage and PSA score - or do they reverse and show less improvement?
It would be fantastic if men on AS could stay there indefinitely with the simple addition of fish oil and a better diet. One can only hope! Thanks for the article,
Phil

@heavyphil Agree. Short term results point in a direction but longer term studies are what is needed.

My heart failure doctor recommended I take 2,000 mg twice a day. I can't remember the exact date he recommended that but probably at least 15 years ago. It usually comes in 1K soft gels so I take two twice a day.

For me, and clarify just saying for me, I did see a 50% reduction in my triglycerides'. I started taking a statin (prescription) in 2015 to help with LDL and plaque found during a heart Catherization. That too made a dramatic difference in my LDL.

Some cheap brands use fish farms not open cold water which I was told was best. My wife was advised to take it also and at first was on a prescribed version. But her PCP said she could take the OTC brand just stay with a known brand manufacturer.

Yes I agree. All those years I was taking before PC diagnosis it could have been helping keep it at bay.

I am very careful though on my supplements. I talk to both my heart failure, and electrophysiologist about taking my supplements and sometimes have been told not to take this or that.

Thank JC for additional info and advice : )) !
I will look for wild caught cold water sourced fish oil < 3

My doctor is pestering me about high cholesterol and for years was chasing me to start taking statins . I "succumbed" to his pressure and tried Crestor in September but unfortunately I had horrible side effects as soon as I started taking it. : (
I am at normal weight and have a healthy diet so there is not much I can do beside trying some supplements and see how it goes.

I am glad to hear that for years now your lipid panel is looking great : )) -may it stay that way forever : ))) !

Lycopene (which I have taken for a decade) is an active ingredient in tomato. Eating a lot of tomatoes is good but I take the supplement as research showed a very good anti oxidant.

When I went through radiation treatments at UFHPTI they showed me research on supplements protecting cells. Some showed supplements protected prostrate cells from oxidation and damage.

Then showed me research if supplements were protecting prostate cells would it also protect the cancer cells. The research was like 50/50. What UFHPTI decided was err on side that could help protect cancer cells as well. They took me off my supplements because the objective of radiation was to damage the prostate cancer cells.

One of the supplements they took me off of was Lycopene two weeks prior to treatments and for 2 months afterward. Don't have an answer, nor does UFHPTI. But you can see their research was showing benefit of lycopene to protect cells but if it became fact then they did not want to be helping protect those cancer cells.

@jc76 At the 2023 Mid-Year PCRI Conference, Dr. Rossi spoke about proton radiation (https://www.youtube.com/live/WTqPnSRYtW4) starting at about timestamp 3:38:45.

At about timestamp 4:36:55, he was asked about Proton & Supplements (& at 4:37:20, he talks specifically about radiation, anti-oxidants and free radicals)

Regarding Lycopene —> I’ve read that Lycopene, being a fat-soluble antioxidant, should be consumed with fat - like olive oil, avocado, or nuts (or pizza!!!!!) to increase its bioavailability. And that cooked tomatoes (e.g., sauce, paste, pizza!!!!) provide more absorbable lycopene than raw.

I had quadruple heart bypass 14 years ago. Had many different statins prior and since. I've been on Crestor and Zetia for years now. Here's what I need to do to prevent muscle problems: Take 10mg (1/2 of a 20mg tab) 3 times a day plus the 10 mg Zetia once a day... PLUS CoQ10, currently about 1200 mg total over the day. I found that 30mg of Crestor at once was too much, so I split the tabs and metered it out over the day. And be aggressive with CoQ10. I don't use the expensive version. Once in a while I have some lower back pain before getting out of bed, but it resolves immediately upon standing. Might not even be related to the statin, but possibly bowels.

Not sure who you are asking for brand name. I use the following supplement companies. Thorne, Life Extension, Qunol, and Puritan Pride.

I do shop around for sales and rewards so that influences me on which vendor I use. Qunol for example has some really good prices on Ubiquinol and Co-Q-10. Life Extension has really good magnesium and resveratrol. But I use Puritan Pride all the time which has a very expansive product line.

The only problem with Puritan Pride is in stock issues. I have researched the above companies for quality control and reported quality issues and all are listed as good. I say that with caveat that vitamin and supplement companies are not under FDA quality control or verification.

@jc76 I thought my request would have gone to Miked77. In the US it seems supplements don't really have a governing body. Being the skeptic that I am, I always wonder if I am actually buying what the company states their product is. Thank for your reply.
