How do I add aging issues to a life I have never been happy in?
I can relate to all I have read in this aging forum except, as I always find, I mostly feel physically ugly and have felt this way my whole life. Age just makes everything worse for me. I know aging is hard but when I add it to the fact that I have hated myself my whole life, it is unbearable. Been to many doctors and therapist thru the years to no avail. I cannot tolerate any serotonin drugs that may help me. The last straw for me was when, 6 months ago, I had my upper teeth removed because of failing crowns and bridge work. I had implants place and am now getting near the date to get my permanent implant crowns place. The problem is my face has aged at least 10 years because of having no teeth. I wish I never would have done this, I have no faith that my dentist will be able to make my facial structure look any better with the implants. Once again I did something to make me feel better about myself and it will not work out that way in the end. I have not enjoyed my life and aging is a cruel way of going out in my opinion. I do not have the inner self esteem I need to make this horrible life journey.

You're My Kinda Person! When I was young I heard my Grandmothers complain about the "Mother Nature's reward for growing old". I was So Sad for them. Then when Mother & Mother-In-Law reached that stage where the wrinkles, sagging, etc. happened, I decided 'when the time comes I'm going to find a Cosmetic Surgeon, Give Mother Nature a Vacation & have a few "nips & Tucks". AT age 60 I Did IT! The surgery was successful, he turned back the calendar approx. 20 years! Then 12 years later I went back & he did a little more of his magic ... would I do it again, YOU BET! At age 88 I'm So Pleased when asked my age, I smile & share, & their response almost Always "Warms the cockles of My Heart" ! It's Not for Everyone, & you Have To start in your late 50's or EARLY 60's. Top Notch Surgeons will make sure you're in Good Health & follow up for +- a year after the surgery, just to be sure everything is going well.
Am I Happy with my decision? ... YOU BET! It had Definitely added to the Quality Of My Life.

1 Reaction@grasping When I was young, full wavy hair, not bad looking, I was such a people pleaser, why I don't know. Wish I'd been so different then. Looking back recently wondering why I never had a plan or goal .Health issues started at 60. I try to keep things in perspective . No I'll never be younger or have the opportunities youth afforded me. but I'm happy to wake up every day. Amazed actually. If I feel sorry for myself I think about the suffering and cruelty in this world , I think worse than in my lifetime. Yes aging changes most of us but I know people in their 90's, crippled over, using a cane but enjoying every minute. They don't care what they look like. They are absorbed in learning, friendship, going to theater (alone, so what?) eating lunch at the senior center every day. Feeling accepted. Do you have any pets? There's so much need. as my mom told me when I was a young girl, volunteer, help others. It's not all about you or me. Your friendly smile might be the only one they get that whole day. Wrinkles and all.

PS. You have to be able to afford it. And sometimes a caregiver when you're in recovery. But good for you! I can see you smiling :-). Loved your comment! Makes me happy 🙂

As a Young Girl when I was with my 2 Grandmothers they would make disparaging comments about how they Hated looking in the mirror & seeing "An OLD Lady looking back"! This was back in the 1950's & '60's when Hollywood Celebrities were talking about Cosmetic Surgery, etc. Years passed, my Mother & Mother-in-Law began showing their age & BOTH complained about "That Bitch, Mother Nature"! They both talked about going to a Cosmetic Surgeon, my Mother "winced" at the cost & my Mother-in-Law had "aged-out", the surgeon told her she'd waited too long, he wouldn't recommend it. That's when I decided, when the time comes, I'll look into it. Just b/4 my 60th Birthday I found a 1st rate Surgeon & had a procedure, A face-lift. Afterward People would tell me I looked 10-15 years younger. The surgeon told me in about 10-15 years I'd regress & IF my Health was Very Good, I might want to come back for a little more. Suggestion Noted!
Over the next 12 years I watched my weight, had Annual Health check-ups, & in the 13th year after the 1st "Lift", went back for a little more.
I'm 88, ... when people ask my age & I tell them, they're almost Always surprised! I feel the expense & discomfort (at the Time of the surgeries) is WELL Worth The Results ... it just makes me feel "Comfortable In My Skin". At 88 I wake up each morning feeling up-beat, positive, & self confident. It's Not for Everyone, however for me I feel it improved Quality of my Senior Years.

Amen to that.
If one can afford it, it does add to health & happiness.
How did you find a good surgeon?
