Severe Peripheral Neuropathy

Posted by jms1954 @jms1954, Jan 29 10:10am

I have been diagnosed with Severe Peripheral Neuropathy in both feet, ankles and lower legs below the knees. I am scheduled to have a partial knee replacement removed and a total knee replacement put in its place. The partial was done 15 years ago, and the new knee is scheduled for March 9th. Should I be concerned about further nerve damage from the surgery? My surgeons N.P. says its a routine surgery even with the neuropathy, I find that a little hard to believe so I'm reaching out for suggestions and others experiences.

@jms1954, I'm pushing 80 really hard. In 2021 I was diagnosed with ideopathic peripheral neuropathy after several years of worsening symptoms. My neuropathy started in my feet and has moved up to my thighs with burning, tingling sensations and the feeling of spongy walking. In 2022 I had a total left hip replacement and in 2024 a total right knee replacement. I don't think either surgery has affected the progression of my neuropathy because my symptoms are the same in both legs. I know I'm a candidate for replacements of the other hip and knee. I've been buying time with cortisone injections but the handwriting is on the wall. I won't hesitate due to the neuropathy. I wish you well in making a decision that will provide relief in some form.

@jms1954 has nobody suggested a test using an SCS system?

How did your PN begin?
Did it just... happen?
Which is how it is for many people.

Like you, I have no pain from my PN which began for no reason I can definitely put my finger on - perhaps antibiotics - and is in both feet & lower legs. Well, no pain but some discomfort in my leg if I lie for long on my right side.

Unless you know that it arose from your previous surgery, I would reckon that there is no reason to think more surgery will aggravate it. In that respect, you have the same risk as anyone undergoing that particular operation.

I never could actually put a date to my Neuropathy, but I will say I've thought about it several times that it all happened after receiving a specific vaccine for a certain strain of flu.

My symptoms started in my feet and have now moved in my thighs. Is there any way to stop this stuff from completely taking over my body? Have tried everything. redfishflyfish@mac.com

I think mine was linked to A-Bs, but no way to be sure.

If you could go back in time, would you have the flu jab? After all, flu can kill you. It's hard to say, isn't it?
The infection I had could have killed me or left me with lasting damage.
All medical interventions come with risk.

What I do think though, as I commented, is that you need not fear a worsening from your knee op.

@v8auto
I would still get the jab. At the time it seemed the thing to do for seniors.
I'm not saying it was a good thing, being as I got Covid twice, but it may have kept me from a severe case.
I do believe that the uncertainty of the jab left a lot of people with new ailments, including my neuropathy.

I had a total knee replacement the year after I was diagnosed with peripheral neuropathy. My recovery from the surgery took longer than the surgeon had anticipated, but that knee is strong and solid. I would definitely only consider that surgery as a last resort. It is amazing how little the average doctor knows about neuropathy,

I would like to know if anyone has received neuropathy treatment from doctors at the Mayo clinic. I will be in Jacksonville, Florida. Is it worth seeking an appointment.
