Newly Diagnosed DCIS Stage 0, Grade 2: Still reeling
I'm still numb from just finding out this past Friday, but trying to do my due diligence to research everything i can find. My mother had something similar 14 yrs ago but she doesn't remember what kind it was. She had a Mastectomy on the one breast with reconstruction. Cancer free since then. No Chemo.
I'm supposed to meet with the Oncologist in my local town next Wednesday, but honestly, I think I would prefer to go to the #1 Cancer Center in NC in Winston-Salem.
If you requested to get a 2nd opinion, did anyone have any issues with wanting to go somewhere different than what was initially set up for you ?
The biopsy they took, it had the calcification cluster. There are other spots, but not cluster in the same breast. I have dense breast tissue and actually concerned about the other breast.
Is it too much to ask for an MRI on the affected breast and the other breast to determine if there is any additional underlying condition in both breasts?
I'm just beginning this journey. I think I'm still in shock, but not actually surprised. I think I knew when i went back for 2nd mammogram magnification that it would come back positive.
I cried a little when the navigation nurse told me the results were positive. I just haven't been able to cry really... I just feel overwhelmed and numb.
sorry for the ramble. I'm just not sure what to do....
Please feel free to share your story journey....

you got this girl! I was diagnosed in September, went to one oncologist, then decided to get a second opinion at Mayo Clinic. I went with Mayo, they did every possible test, etc. I had a lumpectomy, 5 rounds of radiation, and now on Letrozole (an estrogen blocker) I feel great!
You're in the most difficult part of the journey. Find an oncologist ( cancer center - a plus) you trust and in no time you'll be over the hump.
Good luck to you!!!

3 ReactionsI totally understand. I went through the same thing last July and got the news right before my birthday. I was shocked because we don't have cancer in our family, either side. I was on my way to see my son off overseas when I got the phone call. I didn't want to tell anyone and just had to hold it in. Then I just couldn't cry. I was told it was detected early and needed a lumpectomy and radiation, followed with hormone blocker. I was thankful for the news, but just hearing the word cancer can send you in a tailspin, I have to say fear was the hardest thing to deal with before and after. My surgeon was great. My radiation doctor was too. My oncologist doctor is good too, but I just don't feel the same way with him as I do with the other two and have decided to look for another one. I want to feel comfortable with all my doctors. I wish you the best!

4 ReactionsAs @panarosmith said, "you've got this girl!"
I'm 21 years past a stage 0, DCIS diagnoses, both breasts, at age 54. It started with a suspicious mamo (only 11 months after the previous one), followed by ultrasound, then biopsy, and finally MRI guided biopsies, 1 in each breast. All 3 biopsies were positive. It was mind numbing for awhile. Then I just put one foot in front of the other and kept on going. A month later I had a bilateral mastectomy with immediate reconstruction. No radiation, no chemo. I never looked back. I feel the keys to my treatment and recovery were my surgeons and their staffs. The breast surgeon and plastic surgeon were in lock-step throughout; wonderful, skilled, supportive people.
Wishing you all the best as you begin your journey!

2 Reactions@srvtexas I hear ya.... That must have been horrible knowing you were sending off your son. Its like it still doesn't feel real. I'm a person who needs to know the everything and why, how, and what to do to fix it.... It can be a little obsessive at times, but my Oncologist said that knowledge is power... We have to feel comfortable with the decisions we make for our own bodies, genetic history etc... and with our doctors.. So far I'm comfortable, but I havent met the surgeon yet. So we shall see. How did your lumpectomy and radiation go ? Are you doing okay now ?
@justlucky that's awesome !!!!! thank you for sharing... I think Im about right there.. too much life to live yet... Im 65, retired a year ago today and this past year i think my body was just detoxing from a 40 yrs of a stressful job. One that I enjoyed, but very stress filled. So I'm trying to tell myself... this next year 2026, is about what's best for me. So happy to hear that there was nothing to look back for. Forward only... That's where I am. 🙂

2 ReactionsThe MRI and genetic testing will help a lot in deciding what’s next! Good to know your mom has not had a recurrence!
I was diagnosed 2 years after retiring, and I’m three years post surgery. I did a ton of research at the beginning. Joked with the radiologist that I felt like I’d completed a post graduate seminar in breast cancer treatment!
Wishing you the best! You got this!

3 Reactions@birdie60 The surgeon was great and he did a good job. The radiation went well. It was more of the unknown that really got me filled with anxiety. But all went well. I have been reading about things we should and should not be eating. Not that anyone has mentioned anything about it as yet. But it seems it should be discussed. How are we supposed to be taking hormone blockers if what we're eating is full of hormones? This is another question for my upcoming doctor visit. I hope all goes well with your visits. Everyone I've spoken to stated their surgeons were great. Buts some did not have to do radiation or hormone blockers because it was caught so early. That was awesome for them!!! Best wishes.

4 Reactions@srvtexas as of now, I don' need either per the oncologist because I am estrogen negative. However, I'm going to wait until my MRI results this week and genetic testing.. hopefully they can rush that so i have results before speaking with the surgeon. Did you have lumpectomy with radiation ? Would you share about your experience ?
