Has anyone tried infrared or red light therapy to relieve neuropathy p

Posted by bryce49 @bryce49, Sep 25, 2024

I was recently told that a friend's parent used infrared or red light therapy to successfully relieve neuropathy. Is anyone using it? Or is that another bogus claim?

I have used low-level laser therapy and it was very expensive. My neuropathy consisted of extreme numbness without pain. The therapy improved my condition by about 65% but it was not long lasting.

I've been doing FULL BODY INFRARED LIGHT therapy since August 13th and I just had my 9th session at a local facility. The full body machine is medical grade and FDA cleared. I have experienced pain relief and reduced redness / numbness of toes and feet and reduced burning...but those things are intermittent and I understand that red light results are cumulative and the more you do it the longer the results are noticeable and the better the results will get.

I pay $159/month (signing up for 3 months at a time) and for that I can do up to 20 sessions a month so the per/session price is aroune $8 IF I DO all 20 sessions. I wait a minimum of 24 but preferably 36-48 hours between sessions as I've learned to do via my own research. Just as muscles need recovery time after a heavy weight workout and doing another weight lifting session too soon would be counterproductive...so it goes for the cells that are bathed in INFRARED light!

I'll report back after I have completed the suggested 6-8 weeks of INFLAMMATION sessions and then switch to NEUROPATHY program. The idea is that INFLAMMATION seems to be at the root of MOST maladies. So addressing that will allow the neuropathy programmed sessions to do their job better!

This is a very interesting note about full body infrared light treatment, as I've been looking into this. I have a couple of questions, please. Can you tell me the name of the full body machine you are using (the manufacturer)? Also, you made reference to the "inflammation" sessions and then switch to the "neuropathy program." I've been looking for some guidance, i.e. help with determining length of treatment, wavelength (near infrared, etc.), and other help to determine how to proceed. The places I've visited in the greater Milwaukee area, that have full body machines/beds, don't have answers to these questions – they're not well trained, and they are not medical people. So, if you could point me to where to get some of this information, that would be great. Thanks.

Comment FYI, I use Anodyne Infared Therapy system for my idiopathic small fiber neuropathy. I also have used cold light laser Therapy at a chiropractor (class 2 laser). I have a home cold laser type 3B.
I have had neuropathy for 30+years, but still looking for cause. Skin biopsy showed length dependent increase in axonal swellings in my legs (pain greater at ankles). My only symptom is pain, but the pain is severe without the therapies.

@esthersue hi I never met anyone else that has small fiber neuropathy. Mine is idiopathic also. I don’t feel pain but I feel a crawling sensation over my whole body especially feet. Did you ever feel that. I have a red light I just bought for my home. Praying it works

Hello @debbo66, Welcome to Connect. I'm glad to see that you have already connected with @esthersue. I also have idiopathic small fiber peripheral neuropathy with no pain, just numbness and some tingling. I shared my neuropathy journey in another discussion here - https://connect.mayoclinic.org/comment/310341/. You mentioned your symptoms of a crawling sensation over your whole body especially the feet. I thought you might like to scan through comments from other members who have mentioned similar symptoms. Here's a search of Connect using "crawling sensation +neuropathy" that shows the member comments and more - https://connect.mayoclinic.org/search/.

How long ago were you diagnosed with neuropathy?

Hello, no, I only have nerve pain and tingling in my legs. From reading the Mayo Clinic blog, I can see that neuropathy can be a very confusing condition. There are numerous causes, symptoms, and therapies. From the best of my understanding, the light therapies are all very different. The only Healthcare professionals that offer this are chiropractors and functional medicine clinics; at least in my experience. From reading this blog, it seems that sometimes the light therapies help (but do not cure) and sometimes they don't. I have been on a trial and error journey for a long time. I'm not sure what kind of red light therapy you are using, but maybe a professional opinion would help? My Anodyne system uses thermal light energy and I had a referral from a chiropractor for it (after going for appointments for 3 months). I bought my home cold laser 5 years ago for $4000 after using a similar system at a chiropractor's office. I am assuming that you've been to a neurologist and have had all the available tests for causes for your neuropathy. I hope that your red light system works!

I've been in Redight Therapy Treatments (you step into a round silo size of a telephone booth surrounded by fluorescent lights unlike tanning booth) you put your feet on the prints on the floor and turn it on, Hot Red lights turn on and floor vibrates changing intensity frequently for 15 mins per session.
I am doing it almost every day for the last 3 months I have NOT NOTICED ANY measurable difference but I will continue for a little while longer since they also offer tanning in next room in another silo (extra $treatment). I have name and photo of this Red Light Therapy silo if anyone is interested and requests it, thank you.
