Sigmoid colon resection: What to expect for recovery?
It’s been 4+weeks since my resection. Found a cancerous polyp during a routine screening. Some frustration over the lack of information given by the surgeon as to what to expect afterwards. Late 60’s so I know the healing will take time. Mostly, struggling with bowel urgency/frequency and experiencing stomach pain from gas (pretty sure) is three months s realistic time frame for returning to “normal”? I’ve seen some posts that talk about two years? No further treatment so I was lucky. If anyone has had this surgery and went through or is going through the healing process, I would love to hear from you. Just kind of out there.

@lilbear no, and I don’t plan to…in general they are hard on the body, especially the aging body….while they may taste good in the moment, they often are made with harmful fats cooked at very high temps…if you like ‘crunch’ there are all kinds of ways to get that. Many people use air fryers to get that effect in ways our bodies can handle.

3 Reactions@lilbear I agree with @nycmusic. Fried foods like French fries can be harmful to the sensitive digestive tract.
Hello @virgo1952,

2 ReactionsI had 12 inches of my colon on the left side removed last year because of diverticulitis as far as the sigmoid colon. The surgeon was able to resection it with staples. I was 82 at the time and it took me 8 weeks to recover. I did well for nine months afterward but now I am dealing with IBS and fibromyalgia. When my colon gets irritated it burns then my skin burns all over my body. I am on Lyrica but it doesn't do a lot for the burning nerve pain. I am going to see a pain management specialist and hopefully he can do something to help.

1 ReactionHi, some of you know my disabled autistic , nonverbal , epileptic daughter, sigmoidectomy 2024 with difficult recovery 2025,now on Lactulose 3x day, Miralax once in am
Has bronchitis, put on doxycline and wondering has anyone used these two drugs at same time, what effect does it have on stools?
Also she's never had a colonoscopy but after the anastomosis plus prep ( very hard on her with disability) the scope,I'm wondering how effective Color guard would be?
I'm always looking to the diagnosis and the treatment if need be so hesitant to do more testing
She turns 50 this weekend..
Thank you all

1 Reaction@minajo - I moved your post to this existing discussion of post sigmoidectomy:
- Sigmoid colon resection: What to expect for recovery?https://connect.mayoclinic.org/discussion/sigmoid-colon-resection-10282019/
To confirm I and others in this discussion understand what you are asking, you want to know if she can take polyethylene glycol 3350 (Miralax), lactulose and doxycycline simultaneously? And if the Cologard early cancer detection test would work okay for her after her surgery?
@lisalucier
Yes! She needs lactulose for constipation.. but on antibiotic for bronchitis and I expect diarrhea, dr ordered doxycycline, tho most antibiotics do this
She's on a probiotic too
I really don't know if she can do the prep for colonoscopy ,even tho smaller amounts, pills available but she has awful gas too, and it's gonna be hard to actually get her to center for procedure with being profoundly autistic..
Plus the scope and anastomosis site, can it cause damage?
I fear if we ever get a really a diagnosis needing extensive treatment, can she withstand it, I don't think so:(
Thank you
