Doctors Reprimand Me For No Osteo Meds
Dear One's, my 1st time back on the blog in years. The block has been an inspiration, encouragement and support to me when I was active on it. I have become more ill over the years with many diseases, one of which is osteoporosis. I've had 7 hip fractures; 5 pelvic, 2 Femur. Ouch! No known trauma. Recently I've had several doctors reprimand me for not being on any osteoporosis medications. They have escalated, raised their voice , shook their heads and all of the above. One of them was a hospital doctor who knows me because of so many hospitalizations, said to me that she has seen me decline quickly in the past few years and can see me in a wheelchair in the near future. It was talking with people on the blog about around the world years ago about their experiences with bisphosphonates, Prolia and other osteoporosis medications, and doing a lot of my own research, that made me decide not to take any medications. I felt it was a quality of life issue because if you take something that lasts for 6 months (that's how I would have to take it because of kidney disease) or 1 year, then any unwanted side effects, would last until the half-life I was afraid of. I just can't take more pain! Has anybody else been treated that way by physicians for not being on osteoporosis medication? My dentist told me not to take I think it might be Alendronate aka Fosamax because she said it can cause osteonecrosis of the jaw. If my understanding is correct, the meds can improve fracture risk but not reverse osteoporosis. I have not looked into the medications in a few years. Maybe there's something new I don't know? My last two bone scans showed improvement with taking 3 mg of boron three times a day. I do take other supplements but know they are not as good as what we need that is found in food. I pray you all may experience the comfort of God and the “Peace of Christ which transcends all human understanding" Philippians 4:7. That is the only thing that gets me through is knowing Him well enough and understanding His purpose in all things and, that this life is so temporary; but a blink of an eye in light of all eternity. Jesus said, I am the Way, the Truth and the Life, no man comes to Me but by the Father." John 14:6 SunnyFlower

Yes i had one doctor get upset because I stopped taking Fosamax. He insisted on me seeing an endocrinologist (female). She wanted to put me on Recast and I wanted to think it over due to side effects and she didn't like my hesitation and told me if i wasn't going with the program not to come back. I left upset and crying and didn't go back. Next Endo was from the same office and had the best reviews so I chose him. He wanted me to take Forteo and inject myself daily for 2 years and I said no. Then he put me on Prolia. Hav had some side effects but not too bad. When i try to tell him about new side effects that I might have developed and read about from Mayo and/or Cleveland clinic, his response was well you can go there for treatment, it's nice this time of the year (December, 2025). Very sarcastic. I developed 2 kidney stones because he had me on too much calcium supplements so now I have to deal with that. This is my story. Hope it helps.

What kept you from taking an anabolic like forteo?
I am so sorry to hear about your health. I did want to tell you that the Dentist is telling me in one ear not to do the drugs and the Doctors are telling me in my other ear that I NEED to start them right away. I have many dental issues and I am so concerned. So sorry that Doctors are treating you with not at least some compassion.

I was using the generic of Forteo started 11/29/25 & the pain was so severe I had to stop. It’s 2 weeks off now & I’m still having so much bone pain even in areas that I Never experienced pain or an injury. I did fracture my hip last year & 2 years ago experienced a Comminuted FEMUR Fracture, so I’m no stranger to severe pain!! At 76 I just want to enjoy my life & not spend months recovering from broken bones. So I’m taking calcium, other supplements, trying to eat better & keep it from getting worse 🙏🏻🙏🏻

I didn't want to do daily injections.
Seems like you guys have all made your decision from what I am reading and you want support for that bias. I feel sorry for the doctors who are overworked and frustrated by older people who mistrust and don’t educate themselves sufficiently so they mistrust. Taking care of ourselves as we age is a job. It requires us to participate in our own well-being. Religion is a personal thing and although I have my own spirituality, I can offer that to others for inspiration but I’m not sure that it is what people look for when they come here. They are usually asking for help that has a medical basis In facts and science. I think the mission of the Mayo Clinic forum online is to help connect those with problems to those who have experience or knowledge as a primary tool to improving medical quality of life issues. If you show up here with your own solution, such as your faith in God or a scripture testament, then you aren’t open minded to a supportive medical solution. In times where clinics and doctors are disappearing around the country. People are struggling with needing medical assistance more than ever. This site provides spiritual inspiration after all the medical options have been explored so it seems houses of faith and worship best address spiritual solutions not the Mayo Clinic forum online as it is science based for my experience here.
My endocrinologist wants me to take these meds, too. The drug I took for prostate cancer has a side effect of osteoporosis and I got it. However, because the side effects of the cancer drug were downplayed I'm EXTREMELY hesitant to take another drug (Reclast) that the doctor claims "has minimal side effects for most people." I was estimated to have a 20% fracture risk over the next 10 years which seems acceptable, i.e. that means there's an 80% chance I won't have one. I was told Reclast will lower that risk to 10% so is the chance of more terrible side effects worth an extra 10% "safety net"--FOR ME, I don't think so. Others may choose differently.

3 Reactions@ebrezinsky understandable on the daily. I didn’t want to be doing daily injections. That’s why I did Evenity injections for one year. I had increased my bone density in the spine with weight training.
My bone density after one year on Evenity, keeping up the weight training, is that my osteoporosis has gone to osteopenia, except my right hip which is borderline. I then did a once a year Reclast infusion. Per the endocrinologist I take 1000 mcg of D and 500 mg of calcium at night. I had no adverse side effects from either drug - I finished the Evenity when I was 72,
I’m not big on reading all “potential” side effects. The way my mind works, if I read them I’ll assume I’ll get them.
Makes me sad to hear about some jerk doctors out there. That’s a shame.
Good luck to you all!

1 ReactionThank you for sharing about how the boron helped you. There are so many side effects with many of the other supplements and pharmaceuticals, especially for people with sensitive systems, which includes me. These supplements are not a one size fits all remedy and so treating and being treated for osteoporosis offers "a challenging environment for doctors and patients" (AI). At least boron is an easier supplement to take!! Through hills and valleys, "Pray, hope, and don't worry." (St. Padre Pio)
