High Vitamin B6: How can I lower it?
I have a high Vitamin B6 level but have never taken vitamin supplements. Has anyone had this happen to them. I have no idea how to lower it.

I would have your closest university extension office test the food or the tin
Or environmental dept at state level
Someone needs to know what is the culprit
What is normal b6
Dr don’t really share that info
Hi @cs26. Unfortunately, while fish can be very healthy sources of protein, omega-3 fatty acids and other nutrients, they can also contain high amounts of mercury. I know where I live, we’re cautioned not to eat over a certain amount of fish weekly that have been caught locally, due to mercury contamination.
I found a couple of articles for you online with general guidelines on which fish contain the most mercury.

Looks like the Mackerel might be the culprit?
landersen804 ,
I hope things worked out and you are feeling better by this time.
I am in the same situation having B6 at 40. (range 2 - 20) I do not take any multivitamins, b complex or others. I am not sure what caused this. I have added a lot of fruits and veggies for last few months for fiber rich diet, but I do not know if the fruits like bananas caused it to double the level. Unfortunately, this is the first time I tested for B6, so I do not have any past data to compare.
I am having headaches, insomnia and anxiety these days, because of which I asked the doctor and she ran the entire B panel this time. Other B vitamins looks normal range.
What did you do to manage or resolve the condition?
Unfortunately many drs don’t understand b6 toxicity. You lower you b6 levels by drinking plenty of water, exercise and eating foods low in b6. Most foods have b6 especially salmon, chicken, cereal, spinach (goat and lamb are safe to eat) energy drinks. look up the list of high b6 foods and I suggest seeing a certified nutritionist to help you figure out meal plans. There is a fb group called b6 toxicity with a wealth of information.

2 Reactions@patrio Welcome to Connect. Thank you for sharing the information on how to potentially lower vitamin B6 levels. Have you had first hand knowledge with B6 toxicity?
I had this, the level was so high that my GP at the time, was concerned.
I also noticed the effects on my nervous system.
What I found out was that they added high doses in desserts, which I ate at the time. This was especially the case in dairy products. But another culprit was a supplement that was spiked with crazy amounts of B6. It was the only supplement I took, and not even faithfully. I stopped eating these desserts, and of course the supplement. It took quite a while to get back to a normal level. The thing is that some effects cannot be reversed.

2 ReactionsI finally figured out my exhorbitant B-6 levels after Googling everything. I have extreme fatigue; therefore, I started drinking energy drinks everyday. I almost always had one on me! I took them daily, everywhere! ...on any kind of trip, anytime I was dragging, on vacations, at home, before going to the gym, etc., and sometimes twice a day. For decades! When I needed more energy, I started drinking the EXTRA STRENGTH energy shots. Wasn't til my doctor told me my blood tests showed extremely high levels of B-6 that I started the culprit search. I read the label on the drink bottle and couldn't believe! (My stupidity for not reading labels.) Per 2 oz. serving: 40 mg of B-6 & 2353% daily value. Simultaneously, I was having what I learned was peripheral neuropathy. Didn't know energy shots were causing it! I've had if for so long now, I fear it's permanent. It's awful and very painful! I immediately stopped the energy drinks! Tell a friend!

4 ReactionsWelcome @sboylenotthesinger, Sorry to hear the high B6 levels caused your neuropathy. I also started looking at what I was eating and drinking that contained B6 to make sure it wasn't making my neuropathy worse. The energy drinks are probably the number one culprit for a lot folks. Has your neuropathy improved any once you stopped the energy drinks?

Not yet! My neuropathy is unfortunately coupled with akathisia. (involuntary body movements involving toes, feet and legs) ..jerking and muscle cramping (like charlie horses)! It started out at night, in bed, as just constant sensations that these areas were going to "break out" in moving. It has progressed to extreme leg jerking, knee to almost waist! The good news is it is only happening one leg at a time!!! Sooo, sleep is out of the question for about 5 hours a night! And, now in the daytime I'm back to extreme fatigue I had before energy drinks, along with fatigue from lack of sleep! I'm screwed! BTW, Akathisia was caused by prescribed antidepressants over two decades! Life is sooo hard!

But.... Do try compression socks for your neuropathy! They help with some of the discomfort!
