Urine Container Visit
For my recent urostomy post-op, I had a urine container visit. I messaged the urostomy nurse to find out exactly how they would collect my urine. I had seen on Reddit that sometimes a tube was placed on the stoma to collect it (IF I had read that correctly), and I was curious and wanted explicit instructions.
It turns out that the Mayo Jax nurse said I could change just the bag of my two-piece set. However, we ended up getting up extra early the morning of the tests so that a new bag AND a wafer were placed on me. I usually shower and change both parts in the evenings. For anyone who has not yet had a urine test with a urostomy, I recommend checking the protocols.
For the urine container test, I was given a small jar, per usual. When I got into the bathroom, there was nothing adjacent to the toilet to place the jar. It took me a moment to figure out how to pee into the jar. Since I use two hands to open the valve, I placed the jar between my thighs while standing (well, crouching a little bit), and was able to open the valve and let it flow into the jar. I stopped the flow when the jar was just above halfway full, placed the cup on a counter (which was not near the toilet), then sat on the toilet to finish emptying my bag. I was then able to put the lid on the jar and place it into the cabinet, where someone would remove it from the other side.

The struggle of collecting a urine sample at a medical facility is very real, you described it well. I don't have a solution, just endorsing your description of the difficulty of the process. There is nowhere to place the container safe from tipping and have both hands free to handle the bag.
As far as bag change: I was changing the bag on the morning of the urine collection, assuming that would cut down on bacteria. However, my urine samples had trace of blood. It turns out that when we clean the stoma at the time of bag change, there will be a minute amount of blood. that blood will be flushed out after a couple of bag emptying but not right away. Now I change the bag a couple of days prior to a urine collection and there is no more trace of blood.

1 Reaction@cromme50 Between the bag change at 5:15 am and the urine sample at 10 am, I had a CT scan, which included me drinking 30+ oz of water before the scan. I peed so many times that my pee looked like water, with barely a trace of yellow by the time my urine sample was collected.
@marysews That pee should be so clear the lab will think it came from Tinkerbell, hahaha
Sorry, just being silly.....

2 ReactionsMy experience has been that I had to remove my bag (I have a two piece setup). Then a tube was placed inside my stoma to get the urine out. Much like a catheter. Thus avoiding any contamination from my bag. I am having another test done tomorrow due to the amount of blood that has been in my night bag and my urine in general. I’ll see if they do it the same way this time.
@cromme50 By heaven, with the way life rolls on with all the cr*p we have to deal with, silly is very good. I personally could use more silly in my daily life.
