I came down with type A flu on Christmas Eve (perfectly terrible timing). It was awful. Besides feeling miserable, the coughing never stopped and left me totally exhausted and out of breath. I started feeling better for a day or so, then slammed back into the continual, exhausting coughing. I got Augmentin and prednisone taper, but was still having the exhausting coughing. Went back to doc after a week and he said he thought I had inflamed my windpipe and lungs, and to stop doing the saline neb for now. (My lungs sounded clear except at the very top where coughing occurs) Gave me ipratropium/albuterol to neb every four hours as needed, started me on another prednisone taper and tessalon pearls. It has helped, but only been 2 days. I’ve also tried to suppress the cough with delays and cough drops to let things settle down.
I thought all this was interesting, since we are so encouraged neb saline all the time, so I wanted to share. I’ll report in a few days.
