Chronic pain in from osteoarthritis & stenosis
I'm 96.5 years old and in constant extreme pain. I have chronic pain in my lower back with osteoarthritis, stenosis, and degenerative disc disease. The only thing my Doctor says is to take Tylenol, which has no effect. I've asked for something stronger, but he doesn't believe in pain pills. I have been trying to find another Doctor, but so far no luck. It would be nice to be pain-free for my few final days. Any suggestions?

@borwin98 Journavx is available in the US; I get it at my local pharmacy. However, Medicare does not cover it and it is expensive, around $500 for 30. Also, it is only supposed to be taken for two weeks max, another reason that it is not good for chronic pain. I understand that the manufacturer is studying its use more long term for chronic pain. I still take it occasionally when I am having a bad day out of desperation in case it helps some .
@jcoleary I had my pain pump implanted almost three years ago. I had a good trial with Dilaudid. I have not gotten relief so far. I am currently at 2.35 mg/24 hrs. I have seen others here who have had to go up as high as 4 mg to get relief. I would like to think that you can go up higher, based on my experience. I wish you well.
PS I had a Medtronics SCS for about three years. It helped a lot until it died.

1 Reaction@borwin98 for some people simple sugars cause inflammation.
"Excess added sugars, especially refined ones like fructose, sucrose, and glucose (often in sodas, sweets, processed foods), drive inflammation by spiking blood sugar, increasing insulin, raising cytokines, promoting Advanced Glycation End Products (AGEs), and contributing to obesity, all triggering the immune system and worsening chronic inflammation linked to diseases like arthritis and diabetes. "
Farmed fish and certain sugars aggravate my arthritis for sure. I notice it now at almost 69. The aging process made me notice these things more, I suppose! (maybe I eat less of these things and when I do, its noticable!)

1 Reaction@loriesco You are only a baby, 68, WOW. I have nearly30 years longer on earth. I'm 120 lbs, so not too heavy, but sugar is my weakness. I'm trying to cut it out, so I will try harder. I've learned so much from all who have tried to help me, and I'm so appreciative of this. Thanks to everyone, and God bless all.

1 Reaction@heisenberg34 Thanks for the info. My doctor is a believer in microdosing and said that he will not go above 1mg/day. I also went from 0.9mg/day to 1mg and got dizzy, especially when I would bolus myself. I assume that the body would adjust to the higher dose. Did you have any issues with dizziness and do you have any other medications in your pump besides Dilaudid?
@jcoleary Early on I requested to have my output increased by 20%. Yes, I felt dizzy and a little "out of it" for a day or so. I would gladly trade a little dizziness for better pain relief. I don't have anything else in my pump. The doc tried adding some kind of anesthetic way back, but it did not sit well with me. When I was at around 1 mg, my pain doc said that I was still at a low dose. I hope your doc will loosen up and let you get some increases.
@jcoleary I'm feeling very dizzy and need a walker to walk. Even that is painful. I have only Tylenol for pain, nothing else. Tylenol is of very little help to ease pain.
I'm trying to find a new doctor, but in Canada, there is a shortage of them.

1 Reaction@borwin98 you go girl! Maybe you could cut it out as a "test" and see if that helps. There is medicines to take to control the sugar if it is a problem. I am on Metformin and I can eat more sugars because of it! (probably not supposed to but it works so well! Congrats on your achievements!!!
@heisenberg34 It seems doctors wish us to suffer so we will choose MAID. Chosen so far in Canada, 75,000.
@borwin98 I personally believe that many doctors today are overbooked, often leading to a loss of empathy. They need some sort of course that would teach them how to develop empathy with their patients.
