One knee replacement and will never have another one!
Hello to all of my fellow knee sufferers! I had a TKR in 2020. I had a very rough time after the surgery…..allergies to pain meds etc and had to only take Tylenol! PT for six months following surgery. My knee (right) is still painful and stiff, even after the replacement. I had this done at a top Boston hospital with a surgeon that came highly recommended. However, his answer to me with all of this pain and stiffness is “It will never be the knee that God gave you.” Oh, great!!! My left knee is bad but I could never go through this surgery again. I have had cortisone shots to the left knee which are no longer working and recently received three gel shots, which did not help. Both of my knees are so painful! Should I seek out a dr who deals with pain? I don’t know what else to do. Other than these knee issues, I am in good health and am 75 years old (although, other than these knees, I don’t feel like I am 75!!!!). Any suggestions or help would be deeply appreciated! I have tried knee braces, creams, ointments, Voltaran, Advil, Tylenol etc. Nothng has helped!!! Thank you, in advance, for any input! MaryAnn from Boston

This is SO true. My knee replacement was 2020. And I have had issues. Fell down 9/2023. MRI w contrast & movement showed that the bottom of replacement had loosened hardware. Only thing that a different doctor could say was possibly causing the pain (after falling). Done everything- except waiting to do the last ditch effort of 6 weeks of non weight bearing. = wheelchair.
With having right rotator cuff surgery on 12-29-25, the wheelchair not possible yet. So it waits. I feel your pain and frustration.

4 ReactionsHello, I am very sorry that you are going through this. I had a right knee replacement May, 2024. It took me over a year to stop having pain. It feels good now. I need my left knee done, but it is not really painful enough for me to get it done. I found out that the surgery was the most painful surgery I ever had. Before I get my left knee done, I have to be in so much pain that I am unable to sleep or cannot walk. I went to a Pain Management doctor during that first year after my knee replacement. The pain wasn’t in my joint, it was in the muscle or nerve in the calf on the right side below my knee joint. He recommended a temporary nerve stimulator type of device to help the nerve. Maybe that is something you can look into.

Two years post TKR and 6 months post insert replacement.
No surgeon can diagnose why I have debilitating pain. I still take Oxy as prescribed which provides some relief but I would prefer a knee that is not 24/7 pain.
I am 75 as well. Addiction? Really! Fix my knee and I will gladly quit the pain meds.

6 Reactions@kellen Recently, I had a great orthopedic dr tell me that there is a fairly new procedure out there for people who don’t want to have a TKR. It’s called something like “genicular ablation” where something is inserted into the nerves in the knee that are causing the pain. The pain goes away until the nerves regenerate again. I think that you can have it done several times but I have to do some more research on it. My PCP told me to make sure that insurance covers it because it is a new procedure.

4 ReactionsI’m sorry to hear this it seems once the surgery is over I’ve found my surgeon to be dismissive to my concerns too. No one mentioned all of the possible issues post surgery during the pre surgery office visits. I feel for you I know the pain and disappointment of TKR especially when we enjoyed an active lifestyle I’m 71.

Thanks to everyone for your comments and support.
My very active life hit a wall with the TKR. My other knee is not good but another TKR is not on the agenda.
The comments regarding your surgeon being dismissive resonates. I have moved on to another Dr. who at least spends the time to try and diagnose what is wrong.
I did have genicular ablation several months ago which did not help but would recommend it as it may help someone else.

2 Reactions@nobend Thank you so much for your reply. You are so right! No ones tells you about so many issues that come about after knee surgery. The pain is excruciating and after going through all of that pain, to not have your knee feel pretty much “back to normal” is disappointing. I’m sure that there are people out there who have had much better luck than me, and I am happy for them.

Thank you!! Prayers are greatly appreciated!!
