Have you experienced severe reaction to Shingles shot?

Has anyone had an extreme reaction to a shingles shot? 18 months ago after taking the first of two shots, I was told maybe I have Ra/PMR, maybe I don’t. Severe inflammation is causing my shoulder bones to deteriorate. Two months ago I had my left shoulder replaced. Mayo previously had a thread about such debilitating reactions to shingles shot but the thread closed.

I'm so sorry that is happening to you 😢 I did not have that severe of a reaction but I did get shingles from both doses and it did not work as I still get shingles.

I had the one-and-done shot 15 years ago with no reaction and then the first of two shots on 6/11/25, kicked me into a horrible situation. I had shingles half around my waist in the 1980’s. Chicken pox as a child.

I got my 2nd shingles shot two days ago. Yesterday I had widespread fibromyalgia pain, nausea and a crazy tension headache, along with pain at the injection site.

Today, 2 days after the injection, I am totally fine.

Good luck and be well.

Two weeks after my Shingles shot, I got Shingles. Neither my Primary nor Dermatology physicians could believe it. After six weeks, when everything calmed down, my Primary told me that a new Shingles shot was now available, and that now I needed to get this one. I was most reluctant, but I figured what are the chances. I should have known. Two weeks later, six more weeks of shingles sets in - in the same area, no less, UGH!
Obviously, the Shingles shots are stronger than they thought.

If you’ll read the first comment in this thread—that’s me. Still in excruciating pain (for 19 months and one reverse total shoulder replacement, with the second one pending). Prednisone, methotrexate, kevzara and Humira did nothing to ease my pain. Ten days ago I started 15mg Meloxicam. Pain (like 12-14 levels), then 3 glorious days of much less pain (7-9 levels). Thought iI had died and gone to heaven! After the 3 short days. I am back to level 12-14. I will add melixicam to my list of duds. My rheumatologists don’t believe me when I say it was the shingles shot that kick started this mess. I wish y'all well and please continue telling your story.

@ellece Like you I got what I consider a mild case of Shingles several weeks after the shot .
I have had 3 types of eczema, all in remission now for years. At first I thought I was having an outbreak of Transient Acantholytic Dermatitis , AKA, Grover's Disease, GD which is a wrap around torso rash. This new rash was plaque like and looked like photos I have seen of Shingles and only on my abdomen one of the areas the GD would manifest on, but it didn't have the individual papuales typical of GD. People mention the pain and itching with Shingles, yet this reaction rash was not as itchy or painful as GD. Miserable yes, it itched and hurt but not in the extreme like GD, and I was able to sleep at night. I saw my derm who told me I should have consulted with him before getting the Shingles shot, as he had seen this reaction before from eczema patients and it was not of an outbreak GD or my other 2 forms of eczema. Perhaps the autoimmune disease component in eczema allowed this vaccine to give me a mild case of Shingles. That was about 6 years ago and have never had another outbreak.

I have been considering getting a shingles shot so this I very informative. I’m curious if anyone had a severe egg allergy as a child? I did and have discovered that if I have a vaccine grown in eggs I have a severe reaction and develop the condition I’m being vaccinated against. I also had chicken pox when young. My GP says it’s ok but I’m wary especially seeing the stories here.
