Do GLP-1 meds help kidney function?

Hi @jeffdief. I'm afraid I don't have any personal experience to offer you, but I did do some research. Studies do show that taking a GLP-1 can slow the progression of chronic kidney disease and lower the risk of kidney failure. The National Kidney Foundation has some really great information on how GLP-1 meds work and how they offer protection for the kidneys. There's also a really good interview you can listen to, just look for the "Hot Topics in Kidney Health" box under the "What are GLP-1 Medications" title on this page: http://kidney.org/news-stories/what-to-know-about-glp-1-medications-if-you-have-kidney-disease

Have you talked to your doctor about starting a GLP-1 medication?

@klp I see my kidney Dr. in 2 weeks and I am going to ask her about taking GLP-1 med . I am watching what I eat but can not lose any weight , also looking at the weight lose benefits of the GLP-1 meds. I have been looking into all the information about GLP-1 meds that I can find and it all seems very positive.

Hello. I was diagnosed with CKD last November. I am low Stage 2 and my Dr has me on GLP-1 and Jardience. I have lost about 30 pounds and my blood pressure is lower. I feel great. I don’t know the big picture of how well these things work but I’m encouraged that my last test showed that my illness is not progressing very much. I hope that helps.

My husband has many lingering issues initiated during treatment for lung cancer which is now in remission. Many immunotherapy effects have been resolved (Afibs, BP, rashes, thyroid, energy, rhinitis, appetite, etc) but his diabetes type 2 has not been controlled by highest doses of Jardiance and Metformin, which has caused CKD 3a. Dr is considering adding GLP-1 to improve A1C to improve kidney function. Sigh.
