Hip injection

Posted by msvjv @msvjv, Jul 30, 2024

Hello. I’m having a hip injection soon to confirm or rule out the hip joint as the source of leg pain I’ve been having. I also have lower lumbar arthritic degeneration. As I understand it, the shot will relieve the back pain and if the source is hip bursitis it will also have an effect on that? So if the pain is relieved, how is the actual source of the pain determined. I neglected to ask the doc this question yesterday and the practice has no messaging system. Responses appreciated.

Also, is the hip injection painful?

Hi-
Interesting on dc’ing the blood thinners. I’m on Eliquis and was told I didn’t need to stop it. I’ll recheck that. My sister said the same thing about quality of life. I just don’t want to face another surgery at my age. But three years from now it would be even more intimidating. I’ll have to wait and see what the injection proves.

OmG yes yes yes, as a now long-term sufferer of chronic back and ankle pain, I don't think that i can stress this point enough. The quality of life is the most important thing that is being adversely affected due to the ever present around the clock 24-7 feeling of never ceasing somewhat debilitating definitely agitating pain! My God what I wouldn't give to feel "normal" again! I'm 50 years old come November 10th and although I haven't actually ever felt any true relief from this condition I am going to continue to hold out hope for the eventual alleviation of pain's terrible grip, and to everyone reading this and suffering as much as or a little less or more than I, I wish you the same and blessings abound to you as well!

Hi. Do you already know you need a hip replacement? My ortho wants me to have the injection as a way of diagnosing the need for a hip replacement. If my pain goes away he says it’s my hip causing the pain and I’ll likely need a replacement.

My question is: what if my pain is caused from the arthritis in my back or from bursitis. If I understand it correctly, the injection would also relieve pain from those sources so how would he know if it was the hip, the back arthritis or the bursitis causing the pain!

Let me know how it goes tomorrow, especially how the injection goes if you get one. And thank you so much for reaching out.

@msvjv Sounds like the exact same problem I'm currently experiencing. I was experiencing sharp pain radiating into my outer thigh. I went to the Ortho Doctor who ordered an x-ray which showed arthritis to the hip and lower back. To determine exactly where the pain was coming from, he sent me for the hip injection. The hip injection is scheduled for 01/27. Curious if your pain was all the time or intermittent? Mine is very sharp when I first stand up or may occur at any moment when I walk or make sudden movements.

@levon024 pain was pretty constant and worsened with activity. The other thing I noticed pre replacement is the front of my thigh would feel really tight and a bit numb shortly after starting to walk. That resolved with the hip replacement.
