I’m a very young 70s, but my neck thinks I’m 100. I was just diagnosed with arthritis in my neck and there are some small bones spurs. I also have sciatica that affects my right thigh and lower back so I can’t sleep on my side like I used to because it hurts my leg no matter what side I sleep on which is really strange.
I’ve been trying to sleep on my back however, after an hour or two the back of my head in the center starts hurting in the Tried every kind of pillow from memory foam to thin two not so thin PT does not seem to help I do take some Tylenol. Arthritis which barely helps, So I trying to find the best way to sleep. I can’t really put any pressure on the curve of my neck cause that is where the bone spurs are and apparently what’s happening is the spurs are pressing up against my nerves, causing the pain in the back of my neck and the base and once the pain starts I’m stuck with it all night going into the next morning.
I do do stretches gently. I do gentle head movements. I use a lot of ice doing everything that I can and research. My doctor tells me there’s not very much that we can be done. I’m getting older the calcification and the bone spurs are there and maintenance is the only thing I can hope for however I’m barely sleeping 3 to 4 hours a night because of the pain, any suggestions would certainly be great to help to reduce the pain find a better sleeping position, which cannot be on my side. It has to be on my back. I’m just at a loss and getting very frustrated. I do not want to take heavy duty pain meds. I use several different creams around my neck and shoulder, but now becauuse am laying on my back my head in the center starts to hurt cause I’m just in one position all night long again thank you for reading this if they have any suggestions, I Would be so grateful.

Hi! I have had spurs in my neck and back for ages. Yes, gentle stretching is helpful but for me and some of the participants on the myfibroteam.com, we use a couple hits of pot or a CBD gummy right before bed.

@pdes I am so sorry that you are getting little help
I have a severely arthritic neck (multiple car crashes starting in 1963). I found the usual doctors did not help. If you can find a chiropractor who works with muscles and does NOT crack joints that might be worth exploring. Also acupuncture, dry needling might help.
I built my own pillow from scratch. Top layer is egg crate. Otherwise I use a lot of lidocaine patches on my hip and knee. Press lightly to find the irritated points - pain can be referred to other areas so need to find the source. I also use rubbing alcohol with chopped up avocado seeds. It is effective although the medical profession does not know how it works. If there are side effects I am not aware of them and at 86 I really do not care if I can reduce pain legally.
Thank you for your kind replies. I have other issues that are keeping me from addressing this in other way I used to get chiropractor care but I can no longer do that because I have an aneurysm. It’s being watched very carefully so no pressure can put on my chest, I have done acupuncture. It doesn’t seem to help. My back is always sore because I used to get chiropractic care but can’t now so there are times I have a really sore low back as well and my neck now too it’s just is insane. My doctors have said I can use a tens unit but only on my back
I never found taking muscle relaxant, or pain painkillers do not work and I don’t like doing that. I prefer to keep things natural so now the last year or so my neck has been so painful just two months ago an x-ray showed a few small bone spurs and definitely arthritis on the left side which is always so sore and when I lay down it becomes terrible radiating throbbing pain if I put any pressure on it even the smallest amount on the curve of my neck it’s awful.
Every article I read everything I have seen heard and spoke to doctors said make sure you support the curve of your neck for good alignment well that seems to be my problem if I put anything on the curve of my neck it starts the pain within five minutes and it does not let up. I believe what’s happening is the bone spurs are pressing on the nerves.
If I could just find a way of minimizing the pain and getting a good nights rest, It’s not so bad during the day cause I’m often moving around sometimes my lower back is really sore but my neck is just sore and not throbbing. My neck the left side and the curve/base of my neck starts to throb with pain when I lay down. Thank you everyone just trying to find something to help me to deal with it in a more natural way if that’s it all possible thank you again.
The only was to go for a pain management, which I will not do and PT which actually made it worse for me so I’m looking for more natural ways I’ve gotten through so many different pillows. It’s mostly sleeping. That’s the problem when I put any pressure on the curve with my neck the pain stops and it does not let up till the next day.
As far as a little bit of cannabis, I would love to do that when I was younger I did but again this aneurysm in my chest, I dare not.

@pdes surgery OR outpatient for bone spurs; opioids for arthritis flare pain (be sure you don't have gout my gout meds really help the joint arthritis!) and botox for the neck pressure, migranes and tightness. Try an MFR therapist. I go once or twice a month for the rest of my life (almost 69) because my muscles cramp/spasm because of my lifelong career sitting over a drafting table. I had eventual surgery. I still wear my neck compression for a few hours a day while I am working. I am a gluten for punishment, so I just figure out how to manage the pain. You might really benefit from the botox! Also acupuncture and trigger point injections work great. My neck is a mess. My posture is bad (genetics). Sometimes I wear my neck cushion to bed and I'm GREAT in the morning.
I had neck surgery - a fusion, bone spurs and arthritis. Feels good now and recovery was 2 weeks and then take it easy. Maybe see a neuro surgeon and just see what exactly is going on in there. Good luck!
