What have you created lately?

Posted by alive @alive, May 30, 2025

I love working on creative projects! Over the years I have done gourd art, calligraphy, cross stitching, made purses and bags from recycled jeans and have created locker hooking tapestries.

This week I have been attending virtual arts and crafts workshops and have learned so much! Since I am working on a lot of projects made from recycled clothes, I especially enjoyed a workshop on making a landscape picture out of fabric. Here’s the piece I have just finished. It’s only 5x7, but it was a lot of fun making it.

I hope others will share their latest projects!

I wrote a song about coming out of a dark place. It's how I felt after starting to recover from prostate cancer, but the song applies to pretty much any tough situation. I play keyboards, can use a drum machine and can write lyrics and a melody but I can't sing or play other instruments so A.I. voices, bass and guitar have FINALLY let me get some of my songs out there without people being subjected to my horrible singing.

Here's a link to the song just in case anyone wants to hear it: https://www.dropbox.com/scl/fi/8ohlpg5sfw8jmiqrt7v8s/Out-of-the-dark.mp4

@scottbeammeup that’s a beautiful song! All of us who have traveled that cancer journey can empathize with your experience.

I went to college (Grace College) with Scott Beam and your user name reminded me of him. Haha!

Last month I learned a new quilting technique meant to use up tiny scraps (think 1 inch square or less) by fusing & quilting it to a background. I cut the resulting quilt to fit the back, lapels and collar of of a jean jacket for a fiber art show. Liking it so well that I am doing a similar one for myself.
Also planning a new gallery layout for a fiber art show later in April - it is so different to what is usually done that I need to make a prototype to show the other artists. Theme "Loose Threads"
These new projects really have ideas humming through my head.

@sueinmn you should post pictures of your quilting project! I have been doing a little bit of it myself and incorporating it in my bag making.

@sueinmn

I really like this thread.
I believe we are living life as "pulling a needle thru a thread"
Each square we patch and make a rich quilt.

@zenren14 Beautiful! I don’t write poetry but admire those who do.

Do you find that winter is a great time for creativity? I like having multiple projects to work on this time of the year.

thank you for your lovely comment.
I am fond of creativity anytime of the year.
I enjoy dibble dabbling as much as time and energy permits.

@zenren14 very well said! I work mostly with donated denim and cotton clothes and make bags out of them. I get them at Goodwill, their last stop before going into landfill. I like giving them a second life. It’s very different from their original designation, but unique and beautiful.

As a leukemia survivor, I also see myself as someone who has gone through the rough process of transformation. I’m not the same person as I was before my illness and deal with limitations, but I’m very content with my second life!

@alive Thanks for the feedback. My screen name is based on Star Trek (as you probably know) because I'm a big sci-fi nerd.

@alive With quilted clothing, simpler is better! For that jacket, I plan to use a modified version of this pattern:
https://cntpattern.com/products/copy-of-a-little-somethin-jacket-1
It is loose, simple, and easily modified. My jacket is of a vaguely oriental patchwork, and will be finished with vintage lace edging from an tablecloth rescued from destruction.
