How can a person be diagnosed with Neuropathy if they are not Diabetic

Posted by Dino Soke @dinosoke, Dec 24 9:18am

I was told that I have Neuropathy in my right ankle and server infection in my left ankle. Now I am understanding that a person must be a diabetic in order to be diagnosed with Neuropathy. Is any of that true?

@gcapling Where are you getting all of these treatments? Medical doctor?

@moochie I go to a chiropractic office that is rather specialized. Every time I go, I am always an hour to complete my treatments. I do see progress however one must be patient when dealing with nerve regeneration.

@bajjerfan What is CVI? How was it diagnosed; ultrasound of veins/arteries? Is it a series of treatments (Chemical ablation). Thanks. Love all of the sharing on this site.

@moorethrpy

CVI Chronic Venous Insufficiency. Poor circulation aka slow veins. Diagnosed with ultrasound. Legs get discolored to a brown color. Legs feel tight to the touch and painful. Sores there are SLOW to heal. Ablation is done in 3 treatments per leg.

I was diagnosed by neurologist only after physical testing done in June 2025.
He initially thought grief, anxiety and stress were causing numbness and tingling (at that time in one foot only) only and I should have counselling and find ways to be happier. He said would do the testing just in case.... and then discovered "real" ie physical nerve damage on the Nerve Conduction tests (NCT) and EMG tests.

As the months progressed it became more and more painful with burning and deep aching and stabbing feeling esp on right foot. The pain spread to both feet and also hands involved but to lesser degree. Now also have some shooting electric shock pains and hands getting more painful. Typing too hard on many days.

I informed him (he didn't ask me) about my chronic (half bottle wine daily) drinking habits before he did the testing but he didn't at that time show concern. Was only after the testing he said stop drinking and will stop progression. I did stop and in earnest. Now 6 months with zero alcohol and still progressing so he said would call it "idiopathic" (no cause found).
Horrible word as if cannot find cause how can stop progression.

I also had gut surgery in May 2025, lot antibiotics and PPI's and didn't think about this before but couple of weeks after that symptoms began. AT 3 month follow up with gut surgeon he said it's possible that combination of chronic alcohol use and the surgery could have caused nerves to be more sensitive 🙁 🙁

No one can tell if that's the reason or something else. ie sleeping tablets been taking for years.
So many possibilities it's just so depressing accepting have chronic land painful, debilitating likely lifelong disease.

No new clinical trials even ongoing as I did ask neurologist that (:
I much appreciate reading all comments here as feel we are on our own diagnosing our own conditions.

So although neurologist can see nerve damage on the NCT and EMG test they cannot ever be sure about causation - can only make assumptions from what seems likely or is most common . They know diabetics often have PN.

@dinosoke I understand perfectly to what you have said. Everyone is scared of the unknown even someone such as myself who thinks and believes that they are invincible and I can handle anything that is thrown my way. People are always telling me that I am their Superman and I guess this went to my head because I believe I am able to protect everyone from all Evel only if they would know that underneath all that hard exterior is a scared and freighted little kid still. Like now. I have a very serious infection in my other ankle but to get me to go into an ER room is like trying to give a cat a bath. I would rather wait it out because I believe that the body can and will heal itself and that is because of the unknown and fear I have of hospital's. I would rather fight 5 guys with knives that I know I can at least hold my own with, than to go into a hospital knowing that I might not make it out of. Sadly today I still believe in that because I have like I said a very serious infection and due to this infection there is a giant hole in my ankle area that is not healing.
I can not afford to miss any days of work for the fact that I get only $95.00 a day protecting those who can not protect themselves and putting my life on the line each and every day and since I have found this job I have been able to get off the streets and living in an apartment for a year now and I can not afford to miss any days of work if I want to stay living in my apartment and eating out of my fridge and not out of a trashcan. So I clean and wrap my infected ankle and I wear a walking boot on my other ankle for the support it gives me in order for me to actually walk. It really does work for myself to be able to walk without so much pain but once I take it off then all bets are off. I can not walk without having to hold on to something to stay sturdy until I can get my leg going.
I am only telling you all this to let you know that people go through what they go through so someone else doesn't have to because they could handle it. Yes it sucks just know like you said. Your very fortunate enough to have kids and to be able to see and hold your grandson. It sure beats facing all this alone trust me.
By the way have you ever tried wearing a walking boot? Seems that if it's working for me it might work for you as well. I don't know your age nor how long you have been putting up with all of this but I know at 45 I should be enjoying life not walking around like I am 90 already.
Have a great and safe New Year and always remember to enjoy this day and every day on Purpose.
