Forteo daily self injections VS Evenity monthly shots?

Posted by cbartonsandiego @cbartonsandiego, 4 days ago

I am in urgent need of osteoporosis treatment and must decide between these two options …. I could use more insight regarding the benefits of the self injections - over the monthly time consuming - Evenity option ? Thanks in advance !

cbartonsandiego, hi.
I haven't taken Evenity, but am taking Forteo and think that Forteo is a far better medication for osteoporosis.
Evenity does build bone faster and it is solid calcium heavy bone developed on the outside of existing bone.
Forteo works more slowly and in a different way. It removes older bone and replaces it with integrated canaliculated bone--less calcium dense with some flexibility resistant to fracture.
Both of the pth drugs Forteo and Tymlos increase chondrocytes which are help the joints but also form the structure for lost bone reconstruction in trabecular bone (spine and femur). This function is unavailable in the other osteoporosis medications.
Forteo has been around for 20+ years and more is known about the medication Evenity is newer so the advantages and disadvantages are not as well researched.
Another advantage of Forteo is that if you have undesired side effects, you can quit the medication because it leaves the system fairly rapidly, usually 4 up to 24 hours.
Side effects with Evenity can last the six months plus. Some people don't have side effects with Evenity.
While you are considering either medication give some thought about what you will take following the one year of Evenity or the two years of Forteo. You might consider 2 years of Forteo, followed by the usual 1 year of Evenity. Evenity is usually followed by Reclast or Prolia.
If you want to know every good thing about Forteo, I'm here to sing its praises.
Best wishes with your decision.

@cbartonsandiego: Forteo sounds pretty tempting as an osteoporosis treatment; however, I thought you needed to hear my saga while injecting Evenity. I am getting ready for my 8th month of self-injected Evenity hoping to build strong bones.
Insurance coverage can be tricky, so I choose to have my mail order pharmacy ship my Evenity 3mo rx. supply to my doctors office where I pick up and refrigerate at home to be ready for my monthly injections in my abdomen fatty area) .
My doc does not want me to get a DEXA scan until I finish the 12 month protocol, so I don’t have any “osteo results” to share yet. I can relay that the first 3 months I had soreness at injections site, and more fatigue, but those symptoms are mostly gone now. I inject before bed and follow a procedure a Osteo peer patient shared with me.
Evenity literature and professional guidance touts it as the fastest bone replacement.
Your doc & your research on osteo treatments will guide you to your decision of treatment for your osteoporosis condition. Best of health to you! Bette. dbamos1945

dbamos1945, what is the procedure your osteo-peer shared with you. I'm curious if the needle is small. It's great you haven't experienced any joint pain. And it sounds as though you don't have swelling at the injection site. Are you using bone markers. And have to decided how to follow the 12 months. Why did you decide to self-inject.
Thanks

@dbamos1945 why can’t injections go into the thigh ?

REPLY

@nycmusic: Hi! In the Evenity literature it says that the abdomen site allows the treatment to get into the blood stream faster than other sites. Patients generally have nurses inject Evenity into their upper arms or thighs as well as abdomen in the Dr. office. Whatever site you select be sure the injections go into a roll of fatty tissue - not muscle or veins.
One of my tips: I ice the injection area thoroughly before I inject; if I have any discomfort at injection site after shots then I put the ice pack back on the injection site while I relax for awhile ready for sleep. This is not in the literature - it’s just my way.
I hope this answers your question.
