I have many degenerative disc's but worst issue is L5 S1 which back surgeon tells me is basically bone on bone. I have not had surgery and have had pain for about 30 years. I agree with the Sparthos brace user but also use a portable tens unit I've gotten at Walgreens. Just wear it under clothing the buttons are on the unit itself it helps me greatly. I do a series of exercises and stetches 3 times a week which I learned from the last physical therapist I saw and always start my morning with a hot water bottle on my back while I sit and have my coffee. I've been to physical therapy many times and none helped but the last one I saw about 3 years ago. I've had numerous injections that haven't really done much.

@valarino thanks. I'm especially interested in your comment about the TENS machine. I've been thinking about getting one. My physiatrist said I could certainly try it, but he's always agnostic about making predictions about whether something will actually help.

Your history looks a bit like mine--lots of problems that show up on an MRI but no clear definition of why you're in so much pain. PT and exercises maybe help, maybe don't.

It's all very frustrating, as I have said about a million times.
