Has anyone received differing diagnosis from different doctors
My endochronologist confirmed osteoporosis based on the DEXA scan showing -3.2 TOTAL Radius value on my forearm scan. My back is normal and I had bilateral hip replacement years ago from long distance running so no hip reading. My rheumatologist subsequently (2 months later) advised I have osteopenia rather than osteoporosis, with a Radius 33% (1/3) value of -2.3, and said I do not need Tymlos at this time. She suggested Reclast instead. The DEXA scan does not reflect a Radius 33% reading, just the total -3.2 value. I have not been able to obtain clarity. Have temporarily suspended my Tymlos injections after starting in late September. Any suggestions would be welcome. Still working out 4 days per week and taking supplements.

@laughlin1947 An endocrinologist is the person to see to evaluate best treatment options for osteoporosis - primary care providers do not have the depth

I'm using Tymlos, which my endochronologist prescribed at my request, after I did lots of online reading and research. That's the first step to rebuild bone, not Reclast as recommended by my "new" rheumatologist. You may benefit from doing a lot of your own research on credible sites (not sponsored sites) to try for realistic guidance. My bone scan showed a reading of -3.2 in my forearm and wrist and yet rheumatologist tells me I don't need Tymlos? Perhaps I should wait a few months more until I actually fracture my wrist? Incidentally, I had both hips replaced 8 years ago at age 68. I was a marathon runner and wore them down over 40 years of running. Don't wait too long, which I did. Doctor had to use screws in the hip that was bone on bone. And the 2 surgeries were really easy. I walked a mile after the first week. Back to your doctor dilemma: follow up with the doctor you trust most. Trust your instincts and do your own research. I ditched the rheumatologist based on her bad guidance.
laughlin1947, a pcp or an endocrinologist can prescribe medications for osteoporosis. The first step should be a dexa scan to determine the condition of your bones. You may be losing height because of the discs-the two sets of bone on bone probably need surgery--either fusion or artificial discs.
You might call your PCP or your endocrinologist and ask for a requisition for a dexa scan. You should be able to do this by phone, so they will have the information for your next visit. Saving you time and money.
If your bone density is low, request labs for testosterone. Loss of testosterone is, like loss of estrogen for women, a source of bone loss.
If you have bone loss, I'd suggest considering Forteo or Tymlos. But if you have bone loss, your doctors will have the medications that they prefer to prescribe. And you should look at all the medications with a wary eye.
I like your orthopedist agreeing that you shouldn't have surgery unless you are having trouble with the hip joint.
Two doctors. -- a new and an old doctor . The new one told me my 1st ever DEXA score shows I have 'serious' osteoporosis at the base of my spine. As for my left wrist which hurts sometimes, she dismissed it.-- She set about prescribing what I needed to take by mouth for my spine.
My long-term doctor (who's also professor at UC Davis) said I have osteopenia at base of my spine--to be addressed with weight-bearing exercises, diet change, etc. My left wrist, yes has osteoporosis... .
Because of the dispute, I took the time to read & research meaning of my DEXA scores in both places. --why didn't I do this before?
I have health challenges after having Covid 3 times...plus I'm the caregiver for my 93 year old husband. Also, I'm the caregiver for my adult son. (Son has prostate cancer and possibly elsewhere. Undergoing tests now.)
The new, young doctor has been sent packing. (During a visit last month she said she had no idea of how to read a blood test that checks my T3 and T4 levels-- important in RXing for Hashimoto which I've had for years.)
How can a doctor be licensed and be so Uninformed ?
