Severe upper left to mid abdominal pain, sometimes radiates to back

Posted by mechanic66 @mechanic66, Dec 9 7:54pm

I'm just looking for some answers somewhere. I have been having this really bad abdominal pain for over 5 weeks, been to the ER and was admitted to the hospital and had CT scans with contrast and had an EGD as well along with all the labs you can think of and they found nothing wrong. When I was admitted they got my pain under control but as soon as I am off the pain meds it comes right back. I've lost 10 pounds in 3 weeks and have a hard time eating much, have had constipation and diarrhea with this with dizziness and vomiting. I had gastritis last year that showed up on a CT scan but nothing this time and it mimicks this from last year but the pain is off the scale, if anyone has any information I'm all ears!!

@nycmusic They used contrast in my CT scans both times and I guess it can cause complications with some people but I didn't have any issues with it. They told me that If you have to have another scan that they wait 24 hours in between scans with contrast so it clears out if your system before you can have another scan with contrast.

@mechanic66 thanks…recently had scan with 2 contrasts…..never had problem before, but this time a delayed reaction of the runs, even though I had hydrated well…doc put me on BRAT diet and I’m recovered…next time around, I will prepare more —extra hydrating and light diet the day before and the day after. Maybe this will help others…..ps I do take a zofran an hour or so before so I won’t interfere with the scan !

So, I had problems ,still do sometimes. What I found out- I was diagnosed with IBS when I was a teenager, little over 50 yrs ago....lol. Abdominal pain and bleeding from the irritation. Took metamucil twice a day. Bothered me off and on for years. Bloating, back pain, right or left flank pain, but it would go away. I would eat more easily digested stuff, drink fluids, that kind of thing. When I got older and hormones changed, I had another bad bout of it. So I had a colonoscopy when I was 49, found some polyps, some gastritis, took some Nexium. It bothered me now and again after that but it went away after a couple days. Then as I got in my 50s and completely quit smoking I had a few horrible bouts of that pain and diarrhea. It was mostly right sided, some back pain, and it was a biting flank pain when I took medication to stop the diarrhea. Another colonoscopy, but this time a different doctor took biopsies of my gut and came back with lymphocytic colitis. I took budesonide for a few years and got off that when I started taking pre and pro biotics twice a day, bkfst and supper. I still get diarrhea once in awhile if I eat too much at once, or really greasy foods, or something hard to digest. Also take Metamucil in the evening , only 1/2 a spoon these days. I know what that pain is like and I feel for you. Gastroenterologist can help you and try to figure out what you eat that does this. IBS, IBD- because lymphocytic colitis is classed that way, and SIBO. My husband gets irritated when we shop because I read labels like I'm getting paid. Good luck to you; hopefully you get some answers.

I have a similar problem. In checking for another problem, my urologist did a Ct with contrast in that area. I was diagnosed with superior mesenteric artery blockage and a splenic artery aneurysm.
Everyone over 60 should have that ct scan.....
