Swollen stoma: Do I need to worry about this?

I have had an Ileostomy for 7 years now and occasionally my stoma protracts outward and is swelled up. I have no idea what causes the spasm but I just wait and in 3 or 4 days it goes back to normal. I used to have a lot of problems with bag leakage but then discovered if I cut the hole bigger in the base plate the leakage past the adhesive piece was not a problem any more. Hope this helps.

Please explain more about what eliminated the leaks. I'm not sure what you meant by "base plate" or "adhesive piece". Perhaps pictures would make it clear.
Did you cut the hole around the stoma bigger? That would expose more skin. Generally not good.
Are you using a two-part system, with a "base plate" and pouch?
