Which med to choose

Posted by kperricelli @kperricelli, Dec 13 11:19am

im 74, weigh oly 102. My new doctor wants me to choose between evenity, forteo , or re clast. What do you think is most tolerable?

kperricelli, Forteo, hands down. I'm a lightweight, too. You have me beat by 2 lbs, if we are dressed.
If you mistakenly choose evenity or reclast or cleverly choose forteo, the trick is to be aware of side effects.
Women tend to be brave and try to tolerate everything. But if you tolerate the side effects too long, you suffer too long. Each one of these drugs has selected patients that they will abuse.
The nice thing about Forteo is that if you have a side effect and stop the medication, you won't suffer long because it leaves your body quickly. But if you take Forteo and have side effects that your doctor tells you don't have anything to do with the medication, they might be wrong. There are things that happen rarely. If you keep on a medication that is afflicting you, you can have longer term consequences.
I'm on Forteo, my third year. I haven't had any side effects. But that isn't any guarantee. I've read of one person who had a cutaneous reaction, but didn't recognize that it was connected to the drug and continued taking the shot. And I've read of one person who had an allergic reaction to something in the medication and stopped it immediately. Any unusual response would wisely make you stop the drug at least to see if the effect evaporates.
If you have an adverse reaction to Evenity, you're stuck. Probably for 6 to 18 months. Reclast is every year or every two years so a bad reaction can be fairly long term.
Forteo is such a kind drug. It clears you system usually in 4hours and in some over 24 hours.
Most people have joint aches with Evenity and with Reclast, but some don't have any such thing.
I hope all the wonderful connectors who've had good experiences with the other medications weight in against me.
Bless your choice.

I want to endorse what @gently said about not pushing beyond a certain point if a medication does not agree with you. Please do not do what Naomi did with Forteo.

BTW, supposedly Evenity is out of our systems in something like 64 days. I do question whether the statement that most people on Evenity have joint aches is correct.

This is something provided to me by my Oncologist's office when I asked for clearance to use Evenity.

@gently Thank you for getting back to me. Forteo looks like the best option. I’ve done the bone building program here , after 2 years if wt lifting , my dexa was a bit worse. I didn’t want to take drugs but I think I have too before I get any older. 74 at the end of the month.

I did reclast and no side effects but it did not help me . I just finished a year of evenity and the results were good. My over all hips improved and femor did as well. Spine did not improve so I am in therapy to strengthen my muscles so to protect my spine.!I’m 68 years old and I had to do something about my osteo bc I was on the very low end of the scale. Although the evenity did well I had a lot of neuropathy pain and still have it almost 2 months later.?
I am now on prolia for maintenance .. I do go to pain management and he has me on gabapentin for nerve pain. You know everyone is different that’s just my journey so far. I just didn’t want to end up in a wheelchair from a broken hip.
I wish you good luck

@cdemetriou
The NP at the osteopoosis clinic and I were not compatible so we parted. I will be seeing a new Endo in Jan and I hope to convince her that half dose is appropriate for my small-boned, 100 lb body.
