PSA rapid rise 3 wks after bilateral inguinal hernia repair
I am a healthy 57-year-old male. My PSA annual readings are typically .8. I went for my annual physical today and my PSA reading was 4.3. I am concerned. Three weeks ago I had laparoscopy bi lateral hernia repair. Left was small and right was medium. Mesh used. Wondering if my rapid rise could be from that? Or something else. Anyone have knowledge or experience in this? Thank you.

There’s no significant correlation between prostate cancer and a hernia repair. They really are two completely different things.
Your PSA isn’t that high. It could just be that Your body is stressed after the surgery and your PSA roses as result. See if your PSA starts to drop over time that’s the most important thing to do. Make sure not to have sex for two days before you get your PSA tested.

1 Reaction@jeffmarc Thank you. Will do. I was worried since at my annual physical it was always .8 and when it jumped to 4.3 at this year's physical I was nervous and wasn't sure if maybe inflammation from the bi lateral surgery 3 weeks ago could have caused it to rise up 3 points.
I agree with @jeffmarc that many things can cause a rise in PSA, as well as that a single increase in PSA doesn’t make a trend.
However….(there’s always a “however”)….a slightly elevated PSA does warrant attention, because not unlike a “check engine” light in a car; it indicates that something may be wrong, and further checks should be made “under the hood.”
Might be as simple as stress after surgery, might be a UTI; might be prostatitis; might be BPH; might be more serious, such as prostate cancer. Just need to have further checks. No need to panic, or rush to a quick treatment decision, or get overly concerned.
If it were me, at my next Total PSA test I would have them also test my “Free PSA” (just to start tracking other potentially relevant markers).

1 Reaction@brianjarvis thank you, sir. Will do. I freaked out with that .8 to 4.3 jump with no symptoms other than recent double hernia surgery.
@carrje
One thing about prostate cancer is that people almost never feel it coming on. Even people with very advanced cases have no idea there is a problem.

1 Reaction@jeffmarc Thank you, sir. Hopeful this rise is tied to my recent bi lateral hernia surgery.
@brianjarvis Thank you. Was retested 1 week later and it dropped to 3.3 from 4.3 and free PSA ratio was 25.5%. Doc recommend retesting in 6-8 weeks. Hoping it was just spike from recent hernia surgery.
