What causes a hernia after prostatectomy?

Had prostatectomy now 2 years later I am having hernia surgery.

Is there a cause and effect to this?

Any one else have this issue?

I had a Prostatectomy in 2006 . Then 39 radiation treatments to my prostate bed in 2013. Since then I had 2 right inguinal hernia surgeries AND 2 left inguinal hernia surgeries. I also had a Ventral hernia surgery. My general surgeon said my muscles could have been compromised by all of my abdominal surgeries and treatments.

I had hernia surgery and then about 2 years later I had a prostatectom. They had a issue with the mesh being in the way for my prostatectomey. I don't see any correlation between the two surgeries causing one or the other.

Yes, I wound up with an incisional hernia in the area above the umbilicus(navel).
I probably caused it straining on the toilet.
It has stayed the same size and doesn’t really bother me enough to have another surgery to repair it.

One more potential side effect of prostate treatments they don't talk about. 3 years later I can still feel the channel under my naval where he went in. I found the surgery sides much less than radiation which for me is the gift that keeps on giving. None of it was discussed before treatment by the radiologist in my case. With so few options I guess they feel it doesn't matter.

Yes, there is a correlation between prostatectomy and inguinal hernia. This article from The Journal of Urology provides details.

Personally, I had hernia surgery many years prior to my prostatectomy. After my prostatectomy I suffered a reoccurrence of the inguinal hernia. The surgery for the hernia was not problematic.
