Metformin for pre diabetic patients?
I was diagnosed as a pre diabetic last week with a glucose of 89 and a A1C of 5.7. I have been using the Mediterranean diet for months which made me lose weight but I confessed I was eating very dark chocolate 2-3 times a week. As soon as I saw the A1C I stopped eating sweets at all. My PCP talked to me about Metmorfin which she prescribes to her pre diabetic patients. Not all of them are taking it they are sticking to their diets. Has anyone with pre diabetes being mentioned Metmorfin and if you are taking it how is it going? I don’t like pills. She wants to do labs in 4 months to see how stopping high carbs, sugar is changing my A1C, but I am doing this for awhile. Let me know. Thank you. Vivian N

@naiviv I know this is an old post, but I have a question. Are you being sure to take metformin with food? It can be really rough on an empty stomach.
Also, it took me nearly a month to get used to metformin.
I hope you have been able to adjust to metformin or have found an alternative.
I tke two. One in the morning and one n the evening 500 each.
@annemc63 Did you ask your doctor why the dose is so high? Did the doctor discuss with you lab results?
@scottrl Hello. I stopped taking Metformin. The Mediterranean diet and exercises which resulted in weight loss brought down my Hemoglobin A1C to normal values. So now I am not taking it and no more side effects. Thanks anyway for your advice. Stay healthy.

1 Reaction@naiviv This is a reduced version. My question was why would i be placed on a LOWER amount. Originally i was on 1000 once a day. Now i am on 850 once a day . Thank you taking the time to reply to my original question.
My guess is that probably your HhA1C is getting lower and you might not need such a high dose but honestly I don’t have an aswer for it. Ask your doctor the reason behind it. I hope you get an answer soon. Be well.
@annemc63 850 once a day is a modest dose.
Although I began with a hideous attack that everyone thought was going to be very serious, since then I've barely registered as pre-diabetic, and I take 1000mg twice a day. If I cut back the dose I see a small rise in BG and A1C - so I stay on it. It lets me cheat a bit on my diet!
Metformin is also one of these drugs that some people think may help with life extension, preserving general functioning as we age. Some people who have normal BG may take 500mg or more per day just for that purpose.
