Severe upper left to mid abdominal pain, sometimes radiates to back

Posted by mechanic66 @mechanic66, 1 day ago

I'm just looking for some answers somewhere. I have been having this really bad abdominal pain for over 5 weeks, been to the ER and was admitted to the hospital and had CT scans with contrast and had an EGD as well along with all the labs you can think of and they found nothing wrong. When I was admitted they got my pain under control but as soon as I am off the pain meds it comes right back. I've lost 10 pounds in 3 weeks and have a hard time eating much, have had constipation and diarrhea with this with dizziness and vomiting. I had gastritis last year that showed up on a CT scan but nothing this time and it mimicks this from last year but the pain is off the scale, if anyone has any information I'm all ears!!

@mechanic66 it sounds like gallstones, but the CT scan would have shown that … I wonder if it is a blockage of the gall bladder duct, liver duct or pancreatic duct …?

I have had similar symptoms since last February, lost 20 lbs, can only eat a few nights and develop severe back and abdominal pain that is evenly placed. Had contrast CT showed nothing but cyst on kidney. I do have KCD that is 3a and steady discovered and confirmed with renal ultrasound I had a bout of ischemic colitis that has calmed down. Colonoscopy showed nothing but endoscopy indicated more test needed to determine where bleeding was coming from. I frequently flunk occult test for bowel movements. I have the same symptoms as you and have been chasing it for years and the struggle is real. Good luck and I hope you get answers

I have been dealing with the same thing for several years. It's difficult to tell where the pain starts as it wraps around my entire upper abdomen. I do have disc issues in all levels of my back. I have been tested for what seems like everything under the sun. I've had the stints put in, taken meds for EPI and restricted diet.
When my hits it's fast and hard, pain leads to profusely sweating, nausea and vomiting. I just got out of the hospital for this last attack and that Dr said it was IBS. I'm sorry you are dealing with this and I know the mental anxiety it brings with each attack. The pain is so intense it feels like you are going to die and I have begged to do just that.
My Dr at the Mayo clinic did surgery in April and found that I had a lot of adhesion of my small intestines with diverticulitis pouches the size of walnuts. I was pain free for 6 months but have started having random attacks again.
I think that Thoracic pain brings on a vagal nerve response that complicates the symptoms.
None of these issues showed up on the numerous test, Dr found out when he did the surgery for gastric bypass to replace the Nissan Fundication. I hope you get answers soon. Don't give up and advocate for yourself until you find a Dr that listens and takes your symptoms seriously.

@lcarsonvtech Thanks for the info I appreciate it a lot. I'm going to my Dr again on Friday and hopefully will get somewhere, I will be needing more pain meds Friday as this is the only way I can even function it's horrible. I was thinking about trying another gastroenterologist for a second opinion but I don't know what to do about that either, my regular gastro doc did my EGD last Thursday and said that he didn't see anything wrong that would explain the pain but something is causing this and they just act like your stupid or something it's really frustrating.

@rashida would that have showed up on a CT scan? Or is it a different and more specific scan that needs to be performed? Thanks for any information I really appreciate it!!!

I had the same-extreme epigastric pain that radiates to the back. After years and so many tests, I found on this site someone else who had Mesenteric Artery Ligament Syndrome. I research myself and followed Mals Awareness on Facebook which led me to a doctor that addresses vascular compressions. After 18 years and surgery, I no longer have that extreme pain, digestive issues and 30 pounds weight loss. Hope this helps.

I wrote about this issue a few days ago and posted it in a new topic. I have “Deffusely Dilated Colon”. My symptoms are the same. I had adhesiolysis last August as my intestines were attached to my mesh. I had been to the ER a few times. ER doc said that it was my back. Went to back pain doc who has been given me trigger point injections with did help a little. I got tired of 6 months of steroid injections so went to a back surgeon also had MRI on back. He said my back is unremarkable and excellent for my age. Good, that gets rid of the back issue.
Check on google for info about deffusely dilated colon. You may find an answer there. I wouldn’t have known if I didn’t have adhesiolysis. Now that surgeon is ghosting me and sent me to my GI doc who is also ghosting me. Now I am paying to go to a specialist out of my area.
Narcotics doesn’t even phase the pain. Here is what does help. Lying on the opposite side of the pain. The pain goes away within about 1/2 hr. Pain comes right back when standing up. The pain is worse at night. What I did find is a liquid diet pretty much stops the pain. It is food in this dilated colon that pushes on the nerves and causes the pain. “Who Knew”.
The photo is a photo of my dilated colon bubble. I take 1000mg of docusate to keep flowing. Poop and gas gets stuck in colon.

Working on that, I have had stents placed in my heart in September so I can't be off my blood thinners. I'm trying to get my cardiologist and my gastroenterologist Dr to discuss this as soon as possible. I had a polyp removed last December that was pre cancerous and was supposed to have another colonoscopy in June but I also had a stent in my heart the end of March so I just can't get a break.

@mechanic66 if there was a gall bladder problem it should have shown up on the CT scan, as that is a more detailed one than an ultrasound, and gallstones usually can be seen on an ultrasound too; however, you have had a CT scan so probably not your gall bladder since nothing has been said about it by your doctor …?
